Dr. Lucy’s Gluten Free Chocolate Cookies & Brownie Cakes and Video Game High School
Junk Food Nation, I watch a LOT of YouTube. I know not everyone has gotten into it, but YouTube has some of the best media content out there, and some of it is shot better, scripted better, and has better timing, actors, and effects that stuff on TV or cable.
My latest guilty pleasure is a show I stumbled upon called VGHS: Video Game High School. See the trailer here:
Now I was never and am not currently a “gamer” – I don’t even own a video game system. Still, a lot of these scenes just make me laugh because they are mocking a style of teen movie that has been created on repeat and that blends good comedic timing with great pop culture gaming references. When I saw this trailer, I was impressed by some of the dialogue and special effects. Then I watched Episode 1:
YouTube watchers will notice the dude from Epic Meal Time and iJustine – some of the most popular personalities on YouTube. Some might notice Zachary Levi from the former hit series “Chuck.” Some of you have no idea who I’m talking about – but no matter. I encourage you to watch my current guilty pleasure, VGHS. The dialogue is great, the way some scenes are presented is ingenious, and while the story is cliché at many points, Freddie Wong, the director, does it in a tongue-in-cheek fashion. There’s only nine episodes, and each one is about 10 minutes. We can have our own YouTube “book club” in the comments – tell me what you think! I promise that MOST of you will not be disappointed.
Today’s junk food: Dr. Lucy’s Gluten Free Chocolate Cookies & Brownie Cakes!
This is the box my Dr. Lucy’s treats came in. I like how it gives the options of what’s inside, but no checkmarks…so THAT’s effective. Also, is the word SERV really saving space/time/letters instead of the word SERVE? No. No it’s not.
Dr. Lucy’s Gluten Free Chocolate Cookies & Brownie Cakes are the second half of what I got in the box, along with the Maple Bliss and Ginger Snap cookies I received and reviewed yesterday. I wanted to review these together because I thought it made sense to review two chocolate items together. Why? Er…sucks to your assmar, that’s why.
Let’s get started with Dr. Lucy’s Gluten Free Chocolate Cookies:
Dr. Lucy’s Gluten Free Chocolate Cookies were very crunchy, just like the other Dr. Lucy’s-brand cookies. The first bite produced a lot of good cocoa flavor, which was decently sweet. Honestly, the first thing that came to mind as I was eating these was “it’s like I’m eating a flattened Cocoa Puff!” – and I mean in the BEST possible way! (I love Cocoa Puffs). This cookie had a TINY bit of sour to it, like a regular sugar gluten-full cookie does, and that really brought out the sweet cocoa flavor. Crunchy, chocolatey, and semi sweet – when I was eating these, I didn’t think “Gluten Free Cookie.” I just thought, “Cookie.” REALLY good. Probably my favorite of all three cookie varieties Lucy’s sent to me.
Dr. Lucy’s Gluten Free Brownie Cakes were, upon first bite, DRY. Which I can give a pass to because its a packaged brownie, and MOST packaged brownies are dry. As I bit into the center of the mini brownie, however, I discovered that it was moister than I originally thought. While the outside was crumbly and dry, the insides were soft, cakey, and semi-moist – and definitely FULL or cocoa flavor. Not as sweet as the brownies I’ve had in my life (homemade to storebought), but still very chocolatey – almost a dark chocolate flavor.
Considering these were Gluten-Free, these were damn good. Still a little dry on the outside, but generally the whole brownie was pretty tasty. Would I have wanted a nice gooey center? Yes. But all-in-all: a good brownie.
Today’s Dr. Lucy’s offerings were, IMO, tastier than their non-chocolate counterparts from yesterday.
If I were to rank them:
1. Chocolate Cookie
2. Brownie Cakes
3. Ginger Snap
4. Maple Bliss
Yeah sorry, Maple Bliss.
But THANK YOU to Dr. Lucy’s for giving me a chance to review your products! You made me believe that Gluten Free CAN still be indulgent 🙂

How much do you want to bet Soft-Serve is actually a trademark?
Gah. Single-serve. Won’t let me fix it either, stoopid WordPress.
@Kel: That would be interesting…but don’t you see the words “single serve” employed a lot generally?
I bought the Brownie Cakes thinking they would be delicious…..Epic Fail……very dry and crumbly not even edible.
I wasted $5.45 on the box that went in the garbage. So disappointed.
I wrote to Dr Lucy’s and received a reply saying they would send me fresh product that was made from their corrected recipe. It hasn’t happended yet!
@Rose Sim: YIKES! I’m sorry you didn’t have a great experience with them. I think I gave them a rating because Id had some pretty BAD gluten free brownies before, which are always a little dry – although it seems like you got a particularly rough batch. I hope you DO get a fresh product….Keep me posted!
Dr Lucy’s came through and a box of brownie bites was on my porch today!
The texture was way better but, the taste was lack luster. My daughter was excited to try it as well and after a few bites left it on the table.
I do however LOVE the chocolate chip cookies. Maple Bliss is very appealing but, I haven’t tried those yet!
@Rosesim5: OH GOOD! LOL, your daughter just left it on the table. haha – well, at least they made good on their promise to replace 🙂
The Dr Lucy brownies are like hard dirt cakes…don’t waste your money!! The cookies are o.k., but Trader Joe’s GF cookies are WAY WAY better!
