New! Doritos Dinamita Nacho Picoso & The Flyover of the Space Shuttle Discovery

Junk Food Nation, here in DC the Space Shuttle Discovery did a flyover – the final flight ever! I posted my opinions about the space program before on this blog. And for or against the exploration of space, I think we can all agree that this was pretty cool:

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH

Ok, maybe I’M the only one who thinks its cool.  Whatever.  Credits to my friends Skip, Jenn, and anonymous Twitter users who I ganked these pics from.  I was just thankful I got to witness it 🙂  Sometimes I really enjoy living in the nation’s capital. Sometimes.

Today’s junk food: New! Doritos Dinamita Nacho Picoso!

The Money Shot

My sister told me about these Doritos Dinamita Nacho Picoso a couple weeks ago, and for some bizarre reason, I didn’t jump at the chance to try them. My big mistake. When I finally saw these at my local 7-11, I basically ran to the checkout to buy them.  Doritos with sticks of dynamite in the name??? These HAVE to be good.  I think.

Dynamite exploding into nacho cheese!

Doritos Dinamita Nacho Picoso (translated “Spicy Nacho”) have been out since late March, when PepsiCo and Frito-Lay rolled them out in Walmarts nationwide.  According to Frito-Lay: “We wanted to transform the bold taste of Doritos tortilla chips into a snack that captures the exciting essence of Hispanic snack foods through the shape and flavors you would find in Latin American cuisine.” Sounds good to me!  After the JACKED Enchilada Supreme Doritos, I’m DOWN for more Latin flavor!

Rolled like Taquitos

Doritos Dinamita Nacho Picoso are rolled up Doritos, like Taquitos, or Flautas. Usually they are stuffed with meat or beans, etc.  These rolled tortillas are, I’m sure, stuffed with salt and MSG.  MMMMM.

Kicked with jalapeno

“They’re Rolled To Explode With Flavor”….? These Dinamita chips need a new catchphrase.  Something like, “Rolled so you can fit more into your mouth at once!” I’d buy that.

My eyes hurt reading these ingredients

Doritos Dinamita Nacho Picoso have the same ingredients most Doritos have. Strangely, no mention of jalapeno in the ingredient list, despite them selling the kick of jalapeno in the previous photo.  Odd…

Mini Taquitos!

These Doritos Dinamita Nacho Picoso snacks were OFF THE CHAIN.  That’s a good thing, oldies. I popped a couple of these into my mouth, crunched, and was greeted by an explosion of flavor.  Definitely very cheesy, but not annoyingly so – it was pure nacho cheese flavor that was nice and bold but still allowed the taste of the corn tortilla chip to come through.

Also, the entire thing had a distinct vegetable-y jalapeno kick – very tasty. These reminded me a LOT of jalapeno cheddar Cheetos. These Doritos Dinamita Nacho Picoso did NOT taste like Spicy Nacho Doritos specifically because of the jalapeno flavor. There was good burn on the end of these which made the entire experience even more pleasant.

Rolled up tight

And the texture was really good.  Because these were rolled, these Doritos Dinamita Nacho Picoso were VERY crunchy – and I do say crunchy as opposed to crispy.  It was like biting into 3-4 Doritos at once (which is what I do anyways with normal Doritos).  So the textural experience was pleasant too.  Overall, this rolled chip was savory, spicy, cheesy, and very crunchy. An A+ snack.  I like it, Frito-Lay. I like it.

I plan to fill these with yellow goo from the E-Z Cheez nozzle.

  2. Was Doritos always cranking out this many new products in a year? I haven’t been paying attention until this site started. I have to try these!

“…stuffed with salt and MSG.” Ha! 🙂

If they’re going with the whole rolled tube-like thing, I hope they do a cannoli-style dessert chip

Actually, this isn’t the first time Doritos comes out with this flavor. Around the earlier half of the 2000s, they came out with a Doritos flavor called Nacho Atrevido. Boasts the exact same flavor, it even has the cheese and jalapeno picture on the front of it. I was quite surprised when I bought these yesterday to find out they tasted exactly the same as the ones in El Salvador. I’m happy though, I’ve always been a Doritos fan. Now that I’ve been in New York for 10 years, whenever someone from El Salvador comes to visit, I would always ask them for Doritos Nacho Atrevido by the crate! 🙂

I found these at a dollar store after moving to Arizona, (Wisconsin never gets the good snacks,) so of course I thought at first they were some import/liquidation* since the first language is Spanish.
Anyway, a very tasty snack, and I especially like that the rolling greatly reduces the crumbs at the bottom (Jacked! too,) in addition to the better crunchy texture.
    Well Done, FL

(*They are a liquidation since the Fresh By is July 31st)

I discovered these amazing chips over the summer when I moved to Southern California. Suddenly they are disappearing from my regular sources (Stater Brothers, Arco gas station). Does anyone have a clue where they are still selling these? My heart will be broken if I only got to enjoy them for a few paltry months!

These are an attempt to copy Takis – a very popular chip with the Latino community. Takis come in a variety of flavors. When I saw these, I thought immediately they were a ripoff. I’m in Houston, Texas, in a neighborhood highly populated with Latinos. Most grocery and drug stores in this area offer a good selection of Latin snacks. So, if Frito-Lay wants to compete for the Latino dollar, they’ve gotta get the goods!
