Review: Arnott’s Dark Mint Tim Tams & My Junk Food Shopping Is BACK ON
JFG Nation, with so many great junk food blogs out there, from my friend Marvo’s The Impulsive Buy to mega instagrammers Junk Banter, Powered by Ice Cream, and Candy Hunting, it’s even easier to sit at home and find out what’s good out there on the shelves without leaving my couch. As a result, I’ve actually had less motivation to go seek out snacks myself! Why pay for the cow when I can get the milk for free, etc. I used to drive to Walmart’s 45 miles away, hike to a random gas station looking for certain foods, etc. – but I’ve stopped doing that recently. I’ve become seriously lazy, basically only reviewing things I find within 15 minutes of my home.
BUT, it’s holiday season, and so the mojo is back. I need to get right, and started with an satisfying Target run:
Let’s start off pre-December with a bang! And let me know if you’ve tried any of the baubles above in the comments below.
Today’s junk food: Arnott’s Dark Mint Tim Tams!!
I’ve discussed Tim Tams on this blog before, and if you don’t know what they are or have never eaten them, WHAT ARE YOU DOING?? TIM TAMS ARE DELICIOUS.
In the US, they have been distributed by Pepperidge Farm, but they are an Australian cookie that is widely popular down unda. In Australia, they are made by Arnott’s. The Tim Tams I’ve seen have all been pretty straight forward – milk chocolate, white chocolate, caramel, etc. This is the first time I’d ever seen Mint Tim Tams, so I have no idea if these have been around for a while. Searching around Google, though, I have a feeling these are relatively new.
As I mentioned during my first Tim Tams post, according to the Arnott’s website, “Tim Tam biscuits were named after a horse that won the Kentucky Derby! In 1958 Ross Arnott attended the race day and decided ‘Tim Tam’ was the perfect name for his new biscuit.” What a weird way to name a cookie. When I eventually have my own junk food line, I’m not going to be naming them after the winner of Powerball….OR WILL I????
As soon as I opened up these Arnott’s Dark Mint Tim Tams, I could smell chocolate and mint, akin to Thin Mints, Andes, and Mint Meltaways. I mean, these smelled amazing if you’re someone who enjoys chocolate and mint. Which I do.
I bit into one of these Arnott’s Dark Mint Tim Tams and my eyes rolled back in my head – very very very good. Tim Tams, in general, are comprised of two lightweight wafers, already very similar to the lightweight chocolate cookie that comprises Thin Mint cookies, but usually without the mint. Here, the mint flavor was there, all delicious and sweet and infused into the cookie. Not overbearing, like I was eating toothpaste, or even a York peppermint patty – just a perfect mix of chocolate and mint.
The wafers are then layered with some chocolate creme inside and then the whole thing is slathered in chocolate. But GOOD chocolate, not the BS on the outside of a Hostess cake. This chocolate was dark and fudgey and complemented the cookie perfectly.
As a holiday snack addition, these Arnott’s Dark Mint Tim Tams were incredible. Perfectly sweet, perfectly dark chocolate-y, perfect balance of mint. Two big thumbs up.

The shimmery M&M’s are not that shimmery. Trust me
I just passed on the Tim Tams at Target last weekend because I didn’t know what they were. But I won’t be able to get enough mint/chocolate this no matter how hard I try. How some people wait all year for pumpkin spice, Im all about December mint! The chocolate covered chips with almond disappointed me. I can handle the fact that they are only dipped on one side because its pretty thick, but they are way better if you add extra salt yourself. Also you cant taste the nuts.
Consider it a small payback for all the times I read JFG reviews from the comfort of my couch and decided to pass on something I would have purchased otherwise. Now if you’ll excuse me, I have to drive 45 minutes to Walmart.
Mmmmm, that sounds delightful. I buy the caramel ones every once in awhile, but only every once in awhile, because they really test one’s self control.
I am really looking forward to the Goldfish review – they look intriguing!
I remember coming across a review of tim tans awhile back while trying to decide if I should buy them. I just copied it and will post it here bc I’m curious if you have tried consuming them in this manner.

If you haven’t tried a Tim-Tam then you really haven’t experienced a chocolate biscuit. Do what the Aussies do – bite a small corner from opposite corners of the biscuit, then dip one of the bitten ends into your tea/coffee and suck in hard…then pop it in your mouth super-quick. It can take a little practice but it’s heaven. They are also lovely slightly melted over vanilla icecream.
I can confirm this practice! We had many Australian counselors at my summer camp growing up and they taught us! They called them Tim Tam Slams, and they’re amazing with hot chocolate/coffee.
This is not a full review until you do a tim tam slam with them!
