Review: Spoonable Buttery Apple Pecan & Eating Your Roommate’s Stuff

Junk Food Nation, do you have roommates? Or, have you HAD roommates? And if so, were you / are you the type that eats your roommate’s stuff?

Confession: I did…and I was.  *hangs head in shame*

Back when I first started law school, I lived with three college friends and had the bad manners to constantly eat their stuff.  More specifically, I’d constantly eat their junk food. Surprise surprise, right?  Even when they called me out on it, I didn’t, at the time, see what the big deal was – I’ll buy you another bag of chips to replace it!  I saw that as equitable.

Of course, I realized later that my actions and explanations were pretty much BS, and for obvious reason – it’s not about whether I’d provide a replacement. In a lot of ways, it’s not even about the fact that you come home to find your stuff half eaten, a violation of “property rights.”  It’s more about the fact that the offender in the relationships feels like it was OK to act this way. I get that now – trust me, if I came home to find my random roommate sleeping in my bed, the explanation “Dude, I’ll wash your sheets” is not gonna jibe.  There’s gonna be some furniture movin’ up in this joint when I’m through with you.

Of course, there is taking it too far.  Take this recent article about a roommate who almost choked a woman to death because she ate three of her roommate’s Chips Ahoy cookies.  According to the article:

When Hall, 23, threatened to kill his roommate when he discovered she ate the cookies for breakfast, at first she thought he was joking.

The victim said she was dressing in a bathroom when Hall started pounding on the door, threatening to kill her.

Because she didn’t take the threat seriously she opened the door and told him: “If you are going to kill me then go ahead,” the victim later told police.

[Hall] grabbed her around the throat with both of his hands and threw her down into the tub…

Yeah…might be time to get a new roommate. Thankfully, none of my previous roommates took this route with me…and they certainly could have. I ate a LOT of their chips.

So, were you ever in this type of roommate situation, Junk Food Nation? Were you the offender or the victim?  And how did you handle it? Tell me in the comments below.

Today’s “junk food”: Spoonable Buttery Apple Pecan Caramel Sauce!

Spoonable Buttery Apple Pecan

Spoonable Buttery Apple Pecan: The Money Shot

One of my favorite companies from the past two Summer Fancy Food Shows, Spoonable is a Brooklyn company with big flavor making the best caramel sauces I’ve ever tasted.  They have a WHOLE SLATE of flavors, and I’ve pretty much covered all of them (here and here).

This year at the Summer Fancy Food Show, Spoonable introduced a new flavor – Buttery Apple Pecan! Not even sold online yet.  I was lucky enough to get my hand on a jar.

Spoonable Buttery Apple Pecan: 7 ingredients

Spoonable Buttery Apple Pecan caramel sauce follows its companion flavors in only using a small number of ingredients, something I (as well as many) appreciate.  No weird gums here.  Just sugar and love.  And water sometimes.

Spoonable Buttery Apple Pecan: CHUNKY!

I cracked this Spoonable Buttery Apple Pecan and sniffed – I immediately smelled caramel/butterscotch aromas.  REALLY awesome smells; I’d expect no less from Spoonable.  The caramel sauce was loaded with tiny bits and large bits of pecan.  It seemed like some of the tiny bits were green apple too?  Maybe.

Spoonable Buttery Apple Pecan: Luscious caramel…

Stirring up the Spoonable Buttery Apple Pecan caramel sauce, the consistency was drip-off-the-knife smooth.  The sauce (besides the bits) was perfectly smooth and fell off the knife in overlapping ripples below it.  Similar to what you see chocolate sauce or maple syrup do sometimes, maybe with a LITTLE more viscosity.

Spoonable Buttery Apple Pecan: HUGE pecans

Inside of this Spoonable Buttery Apple Pecan were both little bits of pecans and apple and HUGE chunks of pecans, as seen above. I couldn’t wait any longer; I spooned a huge spoonful into my mouth.

The caramel sauce was SUPER buttery; it bordered on butterscotch flavor while still maintaining the slightly salty caramel taste I was familiar with.  The bits of pecan broke up the smoothness with great nutty flavor, as you’d expect.  There was a tang to the sauce too, which I attributed to the apple but wasn’t sure.  I needed a comparison.

I broke out my almost finished jars of Spoonable’s Brooklyn Butterscotch and Salty Caramel… the Salty Caramel was WAY salty compared to what I had just eaten. The Brooklyn Butterscotch was very buttery but also more sweet than what the Buttery Apple Pecan. I went back to the Buttery Apple Pecan jar and tasted – and, to me, there was a definite slight fruity.apple-y tang to the sauce which distinguished it from the other two.

All in all, loved it, and you will too if you’re a fan of sauces with a bit of texture. SO MANY CHUNKS OF PECAN.  Delicious.

PURCHASED AT: Not sold yet, but soon I’m sure you can buy it here!

COST: $8.50 (I’m guessing, since that’s what all the others cost too)

You have more than paid off the foodstuff eating debt that you accrued on Fessenden, roomie. At least, in my book.

If someone’s got his or her name on food stuff, I consider it “off limits” unless they offer to share.
