Review: New Honey Maid Cinnamon Creme Grahamfuls & Need Suggestions For What To Give Up For Lent

Junk Food Nation, it’s Lent!  Or, rather, YESTERDAY was Lent.  Or, the start of Lent.  Or something.  I dunno, I’m not Catholic.  Just trying to be topical here.

Anyways, despite not being Catholic, I always thought Lent was an interesting idea – giving up something or adding something to your life to improve your well being, your spirituality, stoking your general desire for self improvement.  As I wrote about it two years ago, it’s whatever it is to float your boat.  But I’m at a loss for what to give up.

A lot of people I know moderate caffeine, alcohol, or add exercise – I already do all those things.  I suppose I could just give up junk food and go dark for over a month, but that’s no fun for you guys.  My friend Sean used to give up the elevator for Lent – but I work on the 11th floor of an office building so….yeah.  I’m gonna have to say no to that one.

So I need ideas.  Gimme some good ones you’ve heard of; tell me in the comments below.  No Facebook? Eat a leafy green every day? Delete Youtube from my life?  What are YOU giving up for Lent?  Let me hear it, below.

Today’s junk food: New Honey Maid Cinnamon Creme Grahamfuls!

New Honey Maid Cinnamon Creme Grahamfuls: The Money Shot

New Honey Maid Cinnamon Creme Grahamfuls are the newest in a long line of Grahamfuls – graham cracker creme sandwiches – put out by Honey Maid.  I’ve reviewed a few on this blog before…I generally liked these.  I like the idea of using Graham Cracker as the medium to sandwich things in between.  It’s not as sweet as a cookie, but still gives a nice flavored base.

New Honey Maid Cinnamon Creme Grahamfuls: why is cinnamon so low?

New Honey Maid Cinnamon Creme Grahamfuls make sense to me – who DOESN’T love cinnamon grahams, and to essentially have cinnamon AND a sweet frosting inside?  Seems like a winner.  It does concern me that the cinnamon isn’t HIGHER on the ingredient list, however…

…and these New Honey Maid Cinnamon Creme Grahamfuls had the standard look of other Grahamfuls.  Red flag #1: Um, here’s a thought – why not use CINNAMON grahams when making this cinnamon creme Grahamful?  I mean, are they worried about TOO MUCH cinnamon?  Hmmm…

New Honey Maid Cinnamon Creme Grahamfuls: looks like paste

The creme inside of these New Honey Maid Cinnamon Creme Grahamfuls was pretty bland looking, with the specks of cinnamon looking…sparse?

I took a drag of creme with the top row of my teeth, because I wanted to try it alone….and it wasn’t great. At all.  It was slightly sweet, but mostly chalky. didn’t really taste like a vanilla creme, and it also didn’t taste like a cinnamon creme, per se, either.  There was a TINY bit of cinnamon flavor, but why aren’t we trying to go bold here, Honey Maid??

New Honey Maid Cinnamon Creme Grahamfuls: WHERE’S THE FLAVOR?

Eaten all together with the crackers, these New Honey Maid Cinnamon Creme Grahamfuls were a real disappointment.  The creme, chalky and not-cinnamon-y-enough by itself, took on even LESS flavor impact when eaten as intended, crackers and all.  This taste like a slightly cinnamon version of a Grahamful; certainly not the flavor explosion I’d hoped it would be.

If you’re buying Grahamfuls, go for the Banana Vanilla Creme.  Avoid these.  Sorry, Honey Maid.

I think you should give up not regularly reviewing fast food/pizza on your blog!

Wow….these sound pretty crappy and why wouldn’t they use cinnamon Graham’s?? Is it strange that I love stale graham crackers, ya know, when they are so soft you can barely swallow??….I love stale peeps too so who knows! Thirteen years of catholic school, never stuck to forty days of giving up/doing something. The only thing I could do was no meat on Fridays….easy, buffalo has great fish fry!!

I have always focused on giving something up in the past but this year I decided to go a different route – I have added individual daily prayer to my life. I homeschool my daughter and we use a Catholic curriculum so there is some prayer/religion every day but I have been neglecting my personal relationship with God for a while. I am praying the rosary and doing religious readings every morning before the rest of my family gets up instead of wasting time surfing around on the computer. I am also focusing on stricter fasting on the required days during Lent (Ash Wednesday and Good Friday) which is something I have major issues with – I HATE being hungry!!!!!! I love your blog and the podcast.

@Kelly: I like it! Some of my friends are religious and they always speak of daily prayer being very positive for them. Hopefully you feel more centered and ready to take on the world every day. Thanks for reading! 🙂

I asked my son the same question earlier this week, what should I give up for Lent. I was expecting him to say chocolate, sweets, maybe even blogging, but his suggestion was that I should give up playing Candy Crush… So yeah no more hooking up to mindless games on my phone for me!

Lent is also observed by Protestant Churches–Episcopalians, Lutherans, Methodists, to name a few. Of interest, Orthodox Christians started Lent on Monday.

Like Kelly, I start off my day with prayer. I worked across the street from a Catholic Church for a few years so it was convenient to go there for prayer and Sat. evening Mass. Meatless Fridays for me during Lent as well.

@Elisa: Ah, good to know. Meatless Fridays I can get behind too – love seafood, fish, etc. What’re your go-to dishes on those days?
