Happy 2013! As Seen In Mexico, Pt. 1
Junk Food Nation, Happy 2013!
It’s a new year, but while I was gone, I missed SO MUCH to talk about! The fiscal cliff, Boehner telling Harry Reid to Go F*ck Himself, a guy winning the lottery and then poisoned with cyanide, the new Monopoly game piece controversy, the last week of the regular season of football, discussion of the NFL playoffs, the NHL lockout ending….all of it, missed opportunities to snark! But that’s ok. Because the motto for 2013 is to JUST KEEP GOING.
With that in mind, let’s take a look at some of the stuff I found down in Mexico, shall we?
These Choco Krispis is of course the foreign version of Kellogg’s Cocoa Krispies. According to Wiki, the mascot is a space adventuring elephant named Melvin. Apparently, Cocoa Krispies have been around since 1958, and even back THEN there was an elephant as the mascot, WAAAAY before the Snap Crackle Pop elf-like characters became the face of this cereal. Who knew???
ZUCUS! Otherwise known as “Frosted Corn Flakes with Sugar.” Yep, these are Frosted Flakes. My favorite part of this cereal is the tiny “CHAGO” written above the gorilla’s shoulder…I think that is this mascot’s name. Is this necessary? Just in case the gorilla picture wasn’t enough, Tods needed to humanize the cartoon by giving it a name?
I have to imagine that this “Sabor Uva = Grape Flavor” Delaware Punch was inspired by Hawaiian Punch’s success. What I don’t understand is why Delaware was picked as the state of choice in this drink – is Deleware known for multiple vineyards? In my local wine section, I don’t remember the aisles being marked Italy, California, French….Delaware. Maybe I’m wrong – tell me. Also, what’s with the shifty eyes????
There were lots of these pre-mixed alcoholic beverages in Mexico’s equivalent of 7-11, called Oxxo. And each of them were basically $1.50. Personally, I can think of nothing more disgusting than SKYY Vodka or Finlandia Vodka sugary bottled drinks, but what do I know? They’re clearly hoping to become as popular as Smirnoff Ice, so instead of getting “iced” people can…er…SKYY you. “You just got SKYY-ed!” Yeah, that’s really dumb too.
The best part about the liquor stores in Mexico – THEY ENCOURAGE YOU TO TRY SAMPLES! Don’t mind if I do, Patron! Don’t mind if I do, EVERY SINGLE LIQUOR IN THE STORE.
This mini-chocolate-filled-croissant snack featured the Simpsons because…of course it does. “Con Supresa = With Surprise.” I’m sure Matt Groening would be VERY surprised.
Oh hey, Oroweat. I remember you when you were called Arnold Bread. I know they are the same company, but it still caught me off guard. But not as much as….
….Yeah. Bimbo. The name and picture says it all, no?
I’ll see you tomorrow, Junk Food Nation 🙂

I know that you bought a case of Smirnoff Ice back in the early 2000s on a “I just had one and it was totally amazing!” kick. I also know that maybe a month later, I think I saw you and your response was “ohmygod I still have half a case of this crap sitting in my apartment, I never want to see one again!”
…so… yeah.
ps. Go Pats!
@Shorneys: BAH!
@Shorneys: True Story
Glad you had a blast! Beware of the Delaware can–it has eyes watching you…
@Elisa: Apparently, Delaware has eyes on everyone!
Nothing says refreshing more than…delaware?
@Nick: I dunno, New Hampshire is pretty damn refreshing
ummmm…”sin gas”?
@Dana: LOL, yes
New Hampshire Represent!
(did i just say that) :/
Apparently, Delaware Punch is named for the cultivar of grape originating in Delaware County, Ohio. And the drink was sold in the U.S. and *apparently* still is sold in parts of Arkansas, Louisiana, and Texas. Now, I live in Arkansas and I don’t know that I’ve ever seen this, but I can’t shake the nagging feeling that it is familiar.
