Review: Cinema Style PopCorners, #MarchSnackness, & Checking In On The JFG March Madness Pool

JFG Nation, this weekend’s March Madness games were crazy. The Wisconsin leaping 3-pointer to send it into overtime. The Florida sprinting trey to win it in OT. Oregon’s and South Carolina’s “Cinderella” runs. The last second UNC game winner. I have a horrible memory and give into recency effect WAY too much, but THESE GAMES WERE SOME OF THE BEST I HAVE EVER WATCHED. So much gasping. It’s not healthy.

Checking in on the JFG March Madness Pool, Melanie and “Cadbury Creme Eggs FTW” are in the lead! I think she’s the only team left that had two of the Final Four correct. I would chide you for having Villanova in your Final Four, but I had them winning it all so what the heck do I know?

Did any of you watch the games this weekend? If so, when, how, and what did you think? Let me know in the comments below.

Today’s junk food: Cinema Style PopCorners!!

To celebrate March Madness, PopCorners sent me a care package to discuss their current social media contest dubbed #MARCHSNACKNESS:

This gist is simple: take a picture of yourself and some PopCorners someplace interesting, share it on social media, tag it as follows:

#MarchSnackness, @popcorners, or @OLRebellion; OR on Facebook at: https://www.facebook.com/ourlittlerebellion

…and you could win some free PopCorners! Easy peasy.

Inside of my own care package was one of every flavor PopCorners makes:

I went with the Cinema Style for this review for a few reasons. First, their regular salt flavor I’ve had a million times. Same with the Kettle. I’ve eaten both cheese flavors before, and they are amazing – but that’s really not a surprise. So it came down to reviewing Sweet Chili Heat vs. Cinema Style, and I didn’t feel like spice so I went Cinema Style.

DO THESE TASTE GOOD? OMG YES.

WHY OR WHY NOT? Classic PopCorners texture and crunch – these Popcorn Chips are light, crispy, and full of corn/popcorn flavor. I wanted to see just how “Movie Theater Butter” bold these would get, and I was not disappointed. BOLD buttery flavor; the butter flavor was creamy, milky, and had a nice salt to it. These weren’t over salted; there was enough salt just to make the butter and corn flavor sing. Sing loudly. These hit a perfect savory note.

ANYTHING ELSE I SHOULD KNOW? Best of all, I got all of the movie theater butter flavor WITHOUT that weird greasy oily feeling in my mouth. That weird coating on the roof of my mouth that I usually get when I eat actual movie theater popcorn? Non-existent here. Nice work, PopCorners.

PURCHASED AT: I mean, you can find these ANYWHERE.

WHERE FOUND IN STORE? LITERALLY ANYWHERE CHIPS ARE SOLD.

COST? Bags usually run $2-$3.

Sincerely,

The JFG

Melanie (Cadbury Creme Egg fan) here – I’ve never seen my name anywhere near the top of a March Madness pool. Very exciting! And even though I didn’t have S. Carolina or Oregon (did anybody?), so happy for those guys and loved watching them pull off the upsets. Great games!

I don’t recall seeing Cinema Style flavor before; is this new? I know the packaging changed some months ago, so maybe the Cinema Style went by a different name? Considering how well Popcorners captures the texture and flavor of popcorn, a movie theater butter flavor makes perfect sense. I’ll be on the lookout for them.

Would you say Popcorners taste the same/crunch the same/ect. as Chipins?
Can’t find those tasty chips anywhere ever since they changed the name to “Fit Chips”! T_T

@junkfoodguy: Thanks! I wasn’t sure if I wanted to try what I called ‘imitation Chipins’ but your review convinced me otherwise.

Turns out they were on sale at Safeway this week so I bought two flavors: Cheddar and Carnival (actually they were the only 2 flavors being sold).

I opened the Cheddar first, took a bite and was sold. Light, crispy, tasty and best of all, the cheddar powder smell wasn’t overwhelming!
Though I have to say, while they are indeed similar to Chipins, I felt like Chipins had the solid crunch and taste of popcorn while Popcorners tasted like popcorn but the texture reminded me more of very, very flat crunchy rice cakes.

Haven’t tried the Carnival flavor yet but after trying the Cheddar flavor, I think Popcorners will be my go-to if I’m in the mood for popcorn chips.

@Carla: Mine too! Popcorners shall be my Chipins substitute from now on.
