Review: Ruffles Sabor a Jamon Chips & We Need More Meat Cups In The US

JFG Nation, if you’re gonna eat like a foodie in Spain, you gotta know about one thing: JAMÓN. Jamon (hah-moan) is simple: it is cured ham from the highest quality pigs. That’s it. But for anyone who has tried jamon, you know it as super tender, super buttery, super porky, salty, DELICIOUS meat in the world. IMO. It’s like the most amazingly silky cross between ham and bacon ever. I wanna line my bones with it.

Spainiards love jamon and so do I. In Spain you’ll find it served on bread. By itself on platters. Maybe rolled up with cheese. And, in Barcelona’s famous Boqueria Market, IN PAPER CUPS:

OOOOO look at those meat cups. Sold with a few bread sticks, these paper cups of Jamon were everywhere, and everyone at the huge outdoor market was munching on them. (Please note the cheese cups right next door. Love.)

MEAT CUP UP CLOSE! So cured….so lusciously tasty.

I’m telling you about Jamon for two reasons: 1) today’s chips are jamon flavored and 2) WE NEED MORE MEAT CUPS HERE IN THE US. When I go to the farmer’s market, I want to be able to buy a paper sleeve of crisp bacon, or slices of bratwurst covered in onions. We need more delivery systems of meat directly into our stomachs. Do it, USA. DO IT.

Today’s junk food: Ruffles Sabor a Jamon Chips!!! Ok, I’ve described to you what jamon is…let’s see how these chips taste.

That is how jamon looks prior to cutting, BTW – huge cured leg where a dude slices expensive shreds using a machete. It’s awesome. The Summer Fancy Food Show had delicious bites like this all the time.

When I opened these Ruffles Sabor a Jamon Chips, I could smell a good amount of porkiness and saltiness. I smelled a good amount of potato chip too. Nothing extraordinary yet.

Ruffles Sabor a Jamon Chips were…just ok. As I ate the chips, I thought that Frito-Lay represented the flavor of jamon wrll, but it got lost on top of the oily Ruffles chip. Jason typically finishes with a buttery meat flavor that is usually well paired with cheese or bread. Here, that buttery flavor was lost in the potato chip grease.

It was like Jamon bouillon flavoring. Very very close but not quite the best match on the Ruffles. Probably wouldn’t buy these again.

Let me know what you think in the comments below. Happy Thursday!

Sincerely,

The JFG

First paragraph under the last picture…Not even going to ask how you know what “Jason” tastes like…you’re suspect JFG.
