Review: New Red Velvet Chips Ahoy! & I Carry Way Too Much To Work

JFG Nation, I’ve come to realize that I am one of those complete pack rats when it comes to commuting to work. Because I live in a city, I take public transportation to work, so I don’t have a car to leave things in. The result? I stuff everything I need into an over-the-shoulder bag with WAY TOO MUCH STUFF.

I’m not even talking Doomsday Prepper level, but it’s STILL a lot of stuff. Keys. Water bottle. Nail clippers. Pens. Lunch. External battery for my phone. Cables for both personal and work phone. Umbrella. Canvas bag in case I want to stop at the grocery store after. AND MORE.

It doesn’t help that my work bag is a thick black leather bag that probably weighs a good 4 lbs. empty. Everyday when I sling it on I’m like, “ugh, did I pack for Everest or something??” Commence back pain.

But I refuse to be one of those dudes in a suit carrying a North Face backpack that is lime green. So my solution is to carry less stuff, I think. But who makes the cut? Who doesn’t? TOO MUCH PRESSURE.

If you carry a “work bag,” what essentials do YOU absolutely have to carry on a daily basis? Let me know in the comments below. I feel like I’m in 7th grade again when I had no locker and had to carry all of my school books around with me all day. NEVER AGAIN.

Today’s junk food: New Red Velvet Chips Ahoy!

New Red Velvet Chips Ahoy!: The Money Shot

New Red Velvet Chips Ahoy! have been out for a while now and were sent to me the same time that Chips Ahoy shipped me their S’mores variety. I typically don’t think of Red Velvet as a summer flavor but what do I know? I still think S’mores isn’t either.

When I opened this pack of New Red Velvet Chips Ahoy! the aroma was… Well, cocoa-y. Indeed it smelled like Red Velvet. It lacked that slight cream cheesy tang in the air, but the cocoa smell was on point.

New Red Velvet Chips Ahoy! also looked the part. Deep red in color, these cookies have cream cheese chips and a creamy center.

I ate one of these New Red Velvet Chips Ahoy! and my first take…. Decent. Not great, not bad, but….decent. The cocoa flavor was there – that plus the smell translated Red Velvet loud and clear. The chips, however, didn’t add much. A bit of creaminess but I was hoping for more CREAM CHEESE TASTE. And I didn’t get that.

Additionally, the inside of these New Red Velvet Chips Ahoy! didn’t help much. Unlike the S’mores variety, the filing here wasn’t soft – it was more Oreo-filling-like, sort of brittle. The flavor just added a general sweet creaminess to the cookie, but nothing truly that amplified the Red Belvet flavor.

All in all these were fine – you won’t mistake them for any flavor BUT Red Velvet, but it’s not the best Red Velvet I’ve ever had. If they punched the cream cheese up, maybe. As is, these are just ok.

Purchased at: Sent to me, but they seems to be everywhere now.

Price: Seen them anywhere from $2.00 to $3.00 each

Sincerely,

The JFG

Currently in my work bag: work laptop (I optimistically bring work home and then have to schlep it back in the next day, defeated), external battery + cables for Bluetooth headphones, phone, and fitbit; camera I haven’t touched in two months + charger; thumb drive my Dad returned to me a week ago; thumb drive with my wedding photos that we’re supposed to pick sometime this summer (got married 3 years ago); spare pair of shoelaces; fold-up hair brush; travel pack of tissues; four mechanical pencils, two pens, marker, highlighter, and two erasers; box with assortment of lapel pins from that business trip last month; two sets of business card holders; latex gloves and band aids (what?); umbrella (it rained today); gum; keys; and two pieces of choral music I’m supposed to be learning on the train.

Why the heck do you need a NAIL CLIPPER? Do your nails grow so fast that you must clip them everyday? Is it something that can not be done at your house? Oh man, we have a nail clipper guy in our office and the public shaming is Game of Thrones level. I vote nix the clippers first. For your dignity!

Although I don’t tend to travel with clippers (once I did). If a nail breaks it could be annoying for the rest of the day, or you could try to snap it off.

I commute in a city as well. In my backpack is: laptop, phone, med kit including all types of pills for any unexpected ailment, umbrella, fold-able shopping bag, chap-stick, gum, keys, pens, headphones, Tide stick, granola bar (in case of hunger emergency), eye drops, sunglasses & stamps.

I don’t get the whole red velvet fad. Isn’t red velvet cake just just cocoa with red food dye? Which, in itself, fake red can taste chemically if there’s too much of it. I DO get the cream cheese frosting, because that rocks, but I’d rather have that on carrot cake or lemon cake. Too bad these cookies missed the cream cheese part.

I liked the Red Velvet cookies, but thought they were like a RV cupcake without icing. Bought the cookies with a tub of icing- problem solved! 🙂

My work bag consists of my lunch and a book.

Which job? I have to say I had a huge bag when I was doing arena security and a second bag if it was a double shift for food/water/sunscreen. For teaching diving I have a huge bag but that’s a given with the amount of gear plus all my books and paperwork. For my current fast food managerial gig…lunchbox with extra snacks in case I can’t steal something from the line, phone charger, headphones.

Isn’t real red velvet a reaction of
    Cocoa
    With buttermilk
    To
    Make
    Red? And
That’s what gives it the unique taste? But most commercial modern
    Items
    Are
    Just Cocoa flavour with red
    Colour?

    No microwave taste?

These “red Velvet” flavors always seem to drop the ball on the cream cheese. For the cloying sweetness of what is essentially a devil’s food cake died red, you need tang from the cream cheese to cut into it. For some reason they always fear the tang!

I usually agree with your opinions, JFG, but not on this one. I love red velvet cake and these cookies were NASTY. My kids wouldn’t even eat them. That is the general consensus on Chips Ahoy’s Facebook page as well. I didn’t think they tasted one bit like red velvet and the aftertaste was horrible.
