Review: Wild Habanero Cheetos & Have You Heard of JOCK JAMS
JFG Nation, today I have a simple straw poll to settle an argument with the JFGal: have you heard of “Jock Jams”? I am providing you no context or explanation, just the question. Please let me know in the comments below.
Today’s junk food: Wild Habanero Cheetos!!
Wild Habanero Cheetos were found at Walmart, and are the official snack of the Mexican National Soccer Team! So of course Chester Cheetah is dressed in cleats kicking a ball, instead of his normal pose as a Cheeto drug dealer. I’m onto you, Chester.
Wild Habanero Cheetos contain habanero which I’m really curious about. Unlike jalapeño or even Serrano peppers, habanero peppers are really spicy but also really tangy – there’s not a lot of vegetable flavor that occurs. As a result, most people see the opportunity to punch up the habanero flavor with something sweet like pineapple.
Opening the bag of Wild Habanero Cheetos, I could see the Cheetos themselves were darker in color and had a REALLY dark red seasoning. They smelled tangy. These two Cheetos looked like a giraffe doing a forward stretch.
I licked one of the Wild Habanero Cheetos and oooooo that powder is potent. Definitely has a spicy kick, but they weren’t as tangy as, says, Flamin’ Hot Cheetos. These actually came off a bit more sweet and smoky. These Cheetos looked like a guy punching his fists in two different directions, or maybe a boxer opening up for a hug.
If you squint a look closely, these two Wild Habanero Cheetos sort of look like Chester Cheetah grumpy and perched on a branch. You don’t see it? No?
i munched on these Cheetos and WOW! These were spicy. Marvo discussed these recently on the Nosh Show and said he thought these weren’t as spicy as the Flamin’ Hot Cheetos, and he’s half right. The flavor was as I described – there’s a more generally smoky cheese flavor that is not as vinegar-tangy as the Flamin Hot variety.
But the spice kicks in on the back end and it is BOLD. I actually had to stop eating these after a few fingerfuls – not because the front end burned my tongue but because the backend spice is large and in charge. One of those slowly building burns where if you burped wrong all of a sudden your throat is on fire.
These were deceivingly spicy. Sharp, cheesy, smoky start, fire finish. Thumbs up if you like spice. If not, run.
Purchased at: Walmart, Germantown, MD
Price: $1.49 each
Sincerely,
The JFG

Pump up the Jam!
Jock Jams, isn’t that some 1990s CD television offer collection?
I want these Cheetos. And for Cheetos Paws to come back.
Um yeah. I worked the scoreboard one season for my High School basketball team in the early 2000’s, which also entailed working the boom box with the Jock Jams CD inside. Only CD we used all season. I still know the track list by heart.
I was under the impression “Jock Jam” was that one song they always played on Friday nights in the mid-to-late 90s, but upon reflection, I bet there were actual several “jock jams,” and that one was a mix. It had Jewel, as I recall, and “Whoop There It Is.”
wow, I feel old. thanks for that.
I own Jock Jams Vol. 1, so yes.
Those Jock Jam prequels were sooooo bad. It didn’t start getting listenable until Vol. 4
So, a couple years ago I was meeting a friend-of-a-friend for the first time. She said her favorite genre of music was Jock Jams, and at the time I hadn’t heard of them. I Googled it afterwards, which answered one question but created a few more.
I have never heard of Jock Jams.
(Are you going to review the Red Velvet Chips Ahoy someday?)
Jock Jams rocked and jocked, as did a jalapeno flavor of Herr’s Cheese Stix (their version of Cheetos) that I had a while ago–and sadly haven’t seen anymore recently.
Oh yeah, I loved Jock Jams back in the 90s.
Yup…”Are you ready for this?” Still have those tracks in my master workout playlist for when I feel nostalgic. 🙂
Yep :). Hubby has vol. 1 and it will randomly pop up around the house. Our next time in the car will then be filled with the melodic sounds of “Are You Ready For This”…

Know it almost by heart. God I listened to this so much in college.
