HEY I GOT ONE & A Soda & Ice Question
JFG Nation, I have to admit – I barely pay attention to Pizza Hut or Pepsi these days. I’m more interested in exploring pizza places near me and drinking Coke instead. But I’m on Twitter and I’ve seen the Promoted Posts regarding the emoji Pepsi bottles; namely, that if you find a bottle with a pizza on it, you get a free Personal Pan Pizza from Pizza Hut.
I was at work walking by the vending machine, not even intending to buy a soda, when I saw this:
HEY. IT ONE OF THOSE PEPSIS! And so I bought it even though I don’t love Pepsi or Pizza Hut. Because I’m a sheep.
Which leads me to a different question – I was taking to different co-worker the other day, and we got on the topic of fountain drinks. And she was complaining that a large drink at a restaurant really wasn’t the 16 or 32 ounces they advertise because of all the ice.
Me: “Yeah, that’s why I usually only get maybe 1/3 cup of ice when I go to a soda fountain.”
Her: *blinking* “What do you mean?”
Me: “Oh I just get enough ice to cool the drink and then I’ll fill the rest to get more soda.”
Her: *crooking head in disbelief* “…you don’t fill the cup with ice?”
Me: “….uh, no. Do you?”
Her: “Of course. EVERYONE fills the whole cup with ice.”
Me: “Uh no, you’re crazy. Who fills the entire cup with ice??”
Her: “I do! Everyone does! That’s what you’re supposed to do!”
Me: “What??? No it’s not!”
Her: “What?! It’s how ice works! You’re doing it wrong!”
Me: “YOU’RE A LUNATIC.”
So yeah – she was ASTOUNDED that I don’t fill the cup with ice.
I was so confused. Filling the cup with ice means less soda. I feel like I’m taking crazy pills. Who was right, JFG Nation? What do YOU do? Let me know on the comments below.
Happy Friday! Who wants a free Personal Pan Pizza?
Sincerely,
The JFG

You are totally right! It’s crazy to fill the whole thing with ice. I think that restaurants typically do that but if you are in charge of your own soda, the less than 1/2 ice plan is best for sure.
I never fill with ice because it wastes drink space. I always just add a tiny bit then the rest with drink. Plus too much ice waters down the drink.
I usually go about 1/2 full of ice if i’m doing it myself
i like it super duper chill
*head tilted, slow blinking*
They FILL the whole cup with ice? Who…what…huh?? Is that what they do at home? Dump a whole tray of ice cubes into their glass and add a splash of Sprite?
i wager most people do not use so much ice. My lovely wife does, but she admits she is an outlier.
A little over half-full is best, I’ve found; so closer to your friend’s opinion than yours. A third full of ice, seems to 1. not really cool the pop quickly/completely, and 2. really melts too quickly, making a cup of lukewarm flat pop. Greater ice/liquid ratio axiomatically = slower melting/bruising of your drink (I tended bar through undergrad and the first year of law school). Science!
I usually forego ice altogether. Otherwise, I’ll fill it maybe 1/4 of the way, if that. Definitely would never fill the whole cup, that’s just bonkers.
(And, IMHO, Pizza Hut’s pizza is detestable.)
I always ask for lite ice at fast food places. If I am in charge I don’t put in much. Who wants to waste that space with ice. It gets all watered down.
I think it’s a regional thing! I’m from SC, and in the service industry, you’re instructed pretty much everywhere to fill the cups up with ice. I now live in Portland, OR, and when you get water in a restaurant it’s lukewarm with 1 lone ice cube quickly melting. It drives me INSANE. But people here give me the same odd look when I have to ask for extra ice in my cup!
And yes, I do fill up my cup with ice all the way at home! I like to have all my cold drinks be as cold as they can. I feel like it actually helps keep the entire drink colder, longer, though you have a bit of dilution. When you only have one cube, it can’t keep up with cooling a whole glass! Different types of ice also have effect, so it can vary from restaurant to restaurant with how much ice you may need.
Hey JFG… You never told us you chaperone insane asylum patients to lunch as a side job!!!!!! WTF with her!!!!
No ice at all. I just end up chewing it, which is why I’m now missing a molar. Besides, the soda is cold enough and I drink it too fast for it to warm up.
Why there haven’t yet been a cup that is invented with a core to keep the ice at bay and the drink is in the center. Like the rolling ice cream ball invention. It might be little pricey but ideal.
I’m another who doesn’t put in ice in soda at self-service fountains either. The drinks already come out cold.
If I’m buying a drink over the counter, I’ll say less ice.
I almost never, ever put ice in if I only get one shot to fill the cup. Refills on the way out the door I’ll put maybe 1/6th ice. MAYBE. Ice waters down soda so badly.
To quote George Costanza:Don’t you think you get more without it?
wow.. i’ve never known anyone who actually fills the entire cup with ice when using a self service machine.. it makes absolutely no sense. you’re absolutely right in this situation.
Yeah, but how much vodka does she put in before the soda?
I was always a fill-it-up kind of girl. After spending a month in London and experiencing the sad truth of getting 3 ice cubes for my room temperature bottle of diet coke at most restaurants, that habit broke. I usually do about 1/3 of a cup. I don’t put any if I’m getting a refill and I know I’m going to take it home and put it in the fridge. Then I don’t get watery soda the next day.
