These New Lay’s Kettle Cooked 40% Less Fat Cream Cheese & Chive Potato Chips are new this year, and I guess the key to these is the “40% Less Fat.” Strangely, when compared to, say, the Lay’s Kettle Cooked Gyro Chips, while they have less fat appear to have near double the calories per chip. I say all this because these chips were REALLY GOOD, and wondered what I was missing. I’m not sure…if you can figure out why the calories in these are so high, let me know.

Anyways, these tasted great. The kettle chip itself was, of course, light and crunchy; there has never been a question regarding the quality of Lay’s kettle chips. The seasoning was very interesting. The first couple bites were very mild – I wondered at first if these “light” chips just had less seasoning. But the more I ate, the more flavor I got – and the flavor was, frankly, spot on. The onion/chive flavor wasn’t overpowering, but after a few chips, I noticed it distinctly. And this wasn’t just a sour cream flavor – the more I ate, I got that distinct cream cheese roundness on the back of my tongue, that little bit of milky smoothness that cream cheese has.

The lightness of the chip just made me think I could crush this whole bag in a straight 8-10 minutes. These may be 40% less fat but they are a better-than-decent chip with good flavor and great texture. Buy them.

  1. Jessica says:

Check the carbs. For the most part, when fat gets removed, they make up for the flavor by adding sugar.

  2. DeannaR says:

Both varieties have the nutrition information by weight (28 g), so even though the number of chips is about half, it’s approximately the same overall amount of chip (by weight).

Comparing pictures, the sour cream and chive chips look thicker than the gyro chips, which adds weight and caloric density per chip.

Maybe that’s the reason for the disparity in serving size by chip?
