DAMNIT. See, this is what I get for not living in NYC anymore. I miss out on all the cool S* like this! *grumble* stupid career goals taking me to DC *grumble brumble* WHY DOESN’T MY OFFICE HAVE AN OREO DOOR.

Anywho. I talked about the Oreo Wonder Vault back when the Cinnamon Bun Oreos debuted. This physical representation appeared for ONE DAY ONLY (yesterday, Feb. 2), to pass out Oreo’s NEWEST flavor, and today’s junk food: Limited Edition Filled Cupcake Oreo!!

Now, I want to confess: I didn’t even know these Limited Edition Filled Cupcake Oreos would be coming to me in the mail! We discussed this Oreo variety waaaay back on Episode 66 of the Nosh Show, but I never paid attention to the release date. Luckily my guardian angels at Oreo know me better than I do, and made sure that if I wasn’t going to visit that magic door in NYC, that I’d have a package in my mailbox. Thank you, PR machine 😉

The party line: “Introducing New Limited Edition Filled Cupcake Oreo Cookies – a rich, chocolate-y treat featuring a surprise dollop of creme filling wrapped into a crunchy cookie exterior.”

First things first: we ALL know what “Filled Cupcake” IS, Oreo. I’ll say it, since you can’t – Hostess Cupcakes, or Ding Dongs, or Ho Hos are a classic American staple (and let’s face it, they are basically all the same thing in different forms). That classic Hostess Cupcake, with it’s dense cake and white sugary creme center…to turn that into a crunchy cookie? Well, that’s genius.

 

I opened up this package of Limited Edition Filled Cupcake Oreos, and sniffed…I got that classic sweet Oreo cookie aroma, and a TINY bit of fudge smell that I got when sniffing the Limited Edition Brownie Batter Oreos. I thought, given the name of the flavor, that these would lean more fudge-y, but I got more plain Oreo aroma than anything else.

The LOOK of these Limited Edition Filled Cupcake Oreos was interesting. I know my lighting was a little funky in the above pic – but basically the tinge of the chocolate creme was only slightly lighter than the Oreo cookie itself (the lower picture is more accurate). And when I opened up the cookie to taste just the chocolate creme only, it wasn’t AS fudge-y as the Brownie Batter Oreos. This chocolate creme flavor was a little sweeter, less cake batter-y, and more…marshmallow-y? That can’t be right.

As you can see, the look of these Limited Edition Filled Cupcake Oreos is just as indicated on the package itself – a chocolate-y creme with a dab of white creme itself. Still confused by the marshmallow taste I thought I was getting, I decided to follow instructions and LIICCCCCKKKKKKKK the entire inside – and then the flavor clicked for me. The flavor I was getting was the way the chocolate-y cupcake tastes in that areas where the white creme is heaviest.

You know what I’m talking about – the first bite of a Hostess Cupcake always underwhelms because you have a bunch of cake and a tiny bit of creme. But now you’ve exposed the creme center – if you take that next bite and chomp out the creamy core, THAT’S what this total Oreo creme tastes like. It tastes like the marshmallow-y vanilla-y creme center mixed in with the surrounding dark chocolate cake.

Of course, when eaten with the Oreo cookie wafers themselves, the flavor profile swings back to the chocolate, and everyone is happy. It’s not too hard to replicate the flavor of a Hostess Cupcake – it is, after all, just a chocolate cupcake with vanilla creme inside – and I think Oreo did a good job matching that taste in a crunchy form. Is the flavor startlingly different than the Brownie Batter Oreos or of regular Oreos? No – we’re really talking degrees of separation, IMO. But fun factor and execution? A+.

I enjoyed. You go buy them. You go buy lots of them.
