Review: Tostitos Cantina Chipotle Thins & What’s Your Best of 2015? Book Edition

JFG Nation, only a few days left in 2015, so let’s make them count. Let’s start with today: What’s the best thing you READ in 2015?

Now I realize that for some people, reading has become something you’ve only heard of. “People, like, put down their screens and look at words? That aren’t…out loud? How does…that…do stuff?” Yep, that’s exactly right, people who don’t read books for leisure. Of course, the flip side of that is that even though you might not read actual books for leisure, you read this blog for leisure. So….maybe the best thing you read in 2015 was this blog? Awh, thanks. You make me blush.

But here’s the best things *I* read in 2015:

THE BIG SHORT by Michael Lewis. Yes, I read this book before saw the movie. Yes, it is a book about the mortgage crisis of 2008. Yes, I did have to read three paragraphs at a time, go back, re-read those paragraphs, and repeated that until I got through the entire book. But by the end I was wide eyed with what actually happened in 2006-2008 and what almost happened to my own investments. WTF, BANKS. STOP RUINING EVERYTHING.

MEN WITH BALLS by Drew Magary. Holy Sh*t. It’s one of Magary’s, of Deadspin and GQ fame, older books, and I finally was able to crack it open at the beginning of the year. But for those who love sports, this book made me laugh from beginning to end. And not in the cheesy, “Oh, this was a real page turner and knee slapper” type of way. More in the “Oh eff, I am convulsing on the subway because if I don’t stifle these laughs I will frighten people around me except now people are looking at the weird Asian guy standing at the end of a subway train biting his lip as tears stream down his face is this some weird anime thing?” …sort of way. Whatever. This was a funny book. Read it.

Were those the ONLY two things I read in 2015? No, AND YOU CAN’T PROVE OTHERWISE.

So yeah, JFG Nation – tell me what the best thing you read in 2015 in the comments below. And don’t just give me the title; explain what you liked about it. I wanna read more stuff; might as well see what I missed in the past year, right? FEED MY BRAIN.

Today’s junk food: Tostitos Cantina Chipotle Thins!!

Tostitos Cantina Chipotle Thins! Just what I need in my life, MORE WAYS TO EAT TORTILLA CHIPS. I swear, I find my self munching on tortilla chips more than I brush my tee*…er, I eat tortilla chips a lot. Anyways, I enjoy Tostitos but have no previously reviewed their Cantina line before (which I know to be just their thin tortilla chip line). But add the word “Chipotle” to the bag? I’M IN! (Especially since there’s no E.Coli in these bags…too soon?  I love you Chipotle. Keep scrubbing those kitchens.)

Let’s do some pics and get right to the chips:

Unlike the previously reviewed Tostitos Fajita Scoops, which smelled of red pepper and beans when I opened the bag, these Tostitos Cantina Chipotle Thins smelled like…barbeque corn chips. Like these. That distinct tomato powder smoke-y aroma. Interesting.

I crunched on a few of these Tostitos Cantina Chipotle Thins and HOLY S these basically just tasted like super thin Frito-Lay BBQ Flavored Corn Chips. Which I don’t hate – texture wise, those familiar with the Cantina line will recognize the thin crispness of the chip. Great chip design – super thin, nice big chips, crispy rather than crunchy, yet not too many broken chips until I got to the bottom of the bag.

Flavor wise? BBQ Corn Chip flavor all the way. Both chips are Frito-Lay products, so it wouldn’t shock me if they just applied the powder from one to another form of chip. These did have a TINY bit more complexity – there was a tiny bit more tang and a little bit more heat. But everything else was very similar – the smoke flavor, the saltiness of the chips with no counterbalance. Aside from the slight tang, these weren’t SUPER savory – the barbeque smoky flavor felt caked on and unrelenting, like with Frito-Lay BBQ Corn Chips. While I crushed plenty of these chips, these were clearly designed to achieve maximum flavor potential when dipped into something else.

All in all, loved these chips. Definitely would eat them again. Great for lovers of BBQ Corn Chips who want a less crunchy version. VERY VERY MUNCHABLE.

11/22/63 by Mr. Stephen King- fascinating book. (Also the 41st King novel I’ve read!)

@junkfoodguy- No, it’s about a man who travels back in time to try to stop the assassination of JFK. One of King’s best, IMO.

And I took a bag of those Tostitos to a birthday party yesterday- they were quite the hit!
