Review: Limited Edition Kellogg’s Pumpkin Spice Frosted Mini Wheats, Nosh Show Ep. 61: Anything But Oreo, & HOLY CRAP FOOTBALL IS BACK
JFG Nation, as I was flipping around the channels last night, and stopped when I saw NFL Football on TV. What the hell was this? Some replay of a game from last season? Then I realized – holy crap, it was the first preseason game! The Hall of Fame game, held annually in Canton, Ohio, to kick off the preseason. A horrible game between the Vikings and the Steelers! COOL!
I immediately realized that I wasn’t ready for this. When did NFL season arrive? Wasn’t the MLB All-Star game just last week? (It was a month ago). Didn’t the Women’s World Cup just finish? (That was OVER a month ago). Wait, has my fantasy football league already drafted??? WHERE WAS I??
I mean, there were so many offseason football stories I was trying to so hard to ignore – DeflateGate, Brady vs. Goodell, offseason roster moves, hold outs, the Bills trotting out friggin’ Matt Cassel – that I guess I actually blocked out football altogether from my brain, like a person with fingers in his/her ears. LA LA LA LA I CAN’T HEAR YOU I DON’T SEE YOU YOU CAN’T MAKE ME CARE ABOUT ALDON SMITH’S THIRD DUI.
But then, there it was, last night. And I watched a good three minutes of it! Until Blair Walsh missed that 48-yard FG. Then I remembered, oh right, horrible preseason football. Flip!
So yeah – anyone else out there feeling the shock that football is back? Am I the only one? Or, are you still too busy following pennant races to bother with the awful mouthspew that is preseason football? Let me know in the comments below.
In the meantime…EPISODE 61 OF THE NOSH SHOW IS HERE!
For you new arrivals, The Nosh Show is a podcast started by Marvo from The Impulsive Buy, featuring Ryan from GrubGrade, Dubba from On Second Scoop, and, of course, me, your friendly neighborhood JFG. Today marks the release of The Nosh Show, Episode 61: Anything But Oreo.
This week, “we spend significantly less time talking about Oreo cookies than we did in the last two episodes. But we do spend part of it talking about the Lay’s Do Us a Flavor finalists again. Also, Eric brings out his inner James Lipton and asks his co-hosts questions about food and blogging.” You can listen embedded here:
You can subscribe to The Nosh Show using various services: iTunes, Stitcher, TuneIn, RSS, or, you can also download the episode.
Today’s junk food: Limited Edition Kellogg’s Pumpkin Spice Frosted Mini Wheats!
Limited Edition Kellogg’s Pumpkin Spice Frosted Mini Wheats are something we JUST DISCUSSED on this week’s Nosh Show. I haven’t eaten Mini Wheats in years, and I haven’t reviewed cereal on this blog very often, but I knew I wanted to try this as soon as I saw it. I might as well fully embrace Fall, even if it is still 90 degrees outside. BRING IT, AUTUMN MARKETING!
Limited Edition Kellogg’s Pumpkin Spice Frosted Mini Wheats are super orange, according to this picture. Is that a pumpkin sitting on a bed of spices? I certainly hope so. Also, I love the image that you can get 9g of Protein but only if you add in your own 4g of milk. Well, then this DOESN’T give 9g of protein, does it, Kellogg’s??
Limited Edition Kellogg’s Pumpkin Spice Frosted Mini Wheats, you missed an opportunity! It should have been: “You’ll FALL in love with the flavor.” FALL? AUTUMN? No? No one else thinks this is a good pun? Fine.
This cereal has cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, and ginger….a very good start.
Limited Edition Kellogg’s Pumpkin Spice Frosted Mini Wheats, BTW, apparently have a TON of iron! Until Marvo mentioned it on the Nosh Show, I had no idea this Mini Wheats were so iron heavy. 90% of my daily allowance in one serving! So much metal…I want to use these as currency somewhere.
As soon as I opened this box of Limited Edition Kellogg’s Pumpkin Spice Frosted Mini Wheats, the JFGal immediately declared, “OMG THESE SMELL LIKE FALL.” And she was right – whatever expectations I had, or hoped for, with this cereal – the aroma confirmed the picture in my head. I inhaled the cereal deeply, and strong notes of pumpkin, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, all spice, ALL OF IT – it filled my nostrils. This wasn’t just a cheap attempt at “Pumpkin Spice” with just pumpkin flavor and cinnamon – I definitely got all the other spices too! Kudos, Kellogg’s.
I munched on several of these Limited Edition Kellogg’s Pumpkin Spice Frosted Mini Wheats, and the flavor was just SPOT ON. These don’t taste like Pumpkin Pie or Pumpkin Cheesecake, and they don’t claim to be – these taste like you basic hearty Frosted Mini Wheats, sweetness and all, with an added bonus of a healthy dose of pumpkin spice seasoning. The spices were at the forefront – the nutmeg and ginger especially – making the pumpkin flavor a more general backdrop for it all. And that was smart move – it meant the milk I ate this with took on a more spice-laden profile than just a generalized fake pumpkin flavor.
All in all, REALLY good, if you’re into the pumpkin spice thing. Which I am. Good execution, and matched my expectations. Awesome work, Kellogg’s. Would buy these again for sure.

If I recall correctly….about a year ago you predicted (on the nosh show) cereals would be the next pumpkin spice product. This sounds like the prefect start….and I hope there are more! ….and more cereal reviews!

Not sure what you’re looking at, JFG, but they DID hit the “Fall in love with the flavor pun” on the back of the box, just below the bowl. See?
Guess it was too obvious for them to pass up after all.
@Robert: LOL, thanks for pointing that out 🙂

PLEASE KEEP the cereal reviews going….
thanks
jas
Damn, just call them Pumpkin Mini Wheats. No need to use the mouthful of a name over and over and over and over and over.
