JFG Nation, pop quiz: What are these?
The reason I ask is because Buzzfeed recently put up a poll asking readers to vote for what these are called. I know them as Freeze Pops, BECAUSE THAT’S WHAT THEY ARE. 23% of Buzzfeed readers, the largest percentage, agree with me. I put out my own inquiry on Instagram here. I got all kinds of answers: Ice Poles, Mr. Freeze, and Otter Pops. A friend of mine called them Freezie Squeezies. She’s a grown adult 😛
I asked the JFGal, and she immediately stated, “Oh those are Otter Pops!” WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA. She explained that Otter Pops were a BRAND of these things, like Kleenex for tissues, Xerox for copies, etc. And to be fair, I’d HEARD of Otter Pops before…but never enough to replace the THING with the brand recognition.
So, I want to know from YOU, JFG Nation – what are the brightly colored things depicted above called? In the comments, let me know, and tell me which state or country you are writing from. Let’s figure out if this is a regional thing.

Limited Edition Key Lime Pie Oreos: The Money Shot
We JUST discussed Limited Edition Key Lime Pie Oreos on this week’s Nosh Show, and we were semi-lamenting the fact that we couldn’t find these anywhere. Dang you, Oreo! Release them nationwid….oh wait, there they are at my closest grocery store. Nevermind.
Graham cookie, bright green filling? Could these go wrong? ………hhmmmmmmm.
Key lime, Key lime………… I don’t see it listed among the ingredients of these Limited Edition Key Lime Pie Oreos. No matter, let’s crack this puppy open.
My first thought even before opening these Limited Edition Key Lime Pie Oreos was: How close would these be to last season’s Limeade Oreos? Wait, you didn’t know there were Limeade Oreos? Well, read my review here, friends.
One immediate difference between these Limited Edition Key Lime Pie Oreos and the Limeade Oreos – for some bizarre reason, when I opened the Limeade ones and smelled, I didn’t pick up virtually ANY lime aroma. I remember commenting on how weird it was. I smelled Golden Oreo, but no lime. What the.
With these Key Lime Pie Oreos, opening the package, I wasn’t smacked in the face with lime aroma, but I definitely caught a bit more citrus. I’ve smelled Key Lime Pie before, and this was close. Key Lime Pie is really tart and citrus-y, and the aroma here came off more…sweet? Like a lime icing. Still, already a better profile than the Limeade Oreos.
As you can see, the Oreo unscrewed revealed the lime green interior. That color isn’t natural.
When I bit into these Limited Edition Key Lime Pie Oreos, I picked up immediate lime flavor. The insides sort of tasted like Lime Starburst or Lime Skittles – just like the Limeade Oreos. To be fair, I really LIKED the Limeade Oreos…and it’s been a while since I had one (my review of those came out in June 2014). I am imagining that these had a bit more tartness than the Limeade ones, but how would I really know without a side by side comparison?
Anyways, the lime flavor here was good. Sweet, slightly tart, decent citurs. Personally, I could’ve dealt with MORE tartness to REALLY hit home that Key Lime flavor, but since the photo on the front shows a bit of meringue, maybe that’s what Oreo was trying to get at – that the creme was supposed to represent a blend of key lime and meringue. Whatever it was, it tasted good. I just wanted a bit more tart.
The Graham Cookie, I think, paired better with this creme than the Golden Oreo. Golden Oreos are just really sweet and have a vanilla flavor; these were more subtle. I didn’t think the graham cookie overwhelmingly “Graham” in the Smores Oreo, and I don’t think it’s overwhelmingly “graham” here – I’d need a bit more honey taste for that to happen. Still, I did pick up the graham flavor, and paired with the lime it was a good combo.
I did feel like the cookie drowned out the lime a tiny bit; like I said, a bit more tartness would’ve cured this. However, overall, just like the Limeade Oreos, I enjoyed these a lot. Key Lime Pie is one of my favorite things, and any non-chocolate Oreo that can capitalize on a decent citrus flavor is going to be good in my book.

The green color of Key Lime pie is never natural. Key Limes are yellow. We had a tree when I was growing up. (FL girl and nerd here)
That’s right! (another FL girl) We’re very picky about our key lime pie and it cannot be green.

You’re all wrong. I’m in Virginia and those frozen things are called Flavor Ice. Or some horrible marketing department spelling of those words, like “Flav-R-Ice.”
I’ve only ever heard them called Otter pops here in SoCal. Even if the brand is Flav-r-ice, I still call them Otter pops because I like the name better
East coast here, Nj specific. We had these growing up in the 80’s, knew them as “Flavor Ice” which was the brand name or some times just “Icees” which is what the kids around the neighborhood referred to them as.
I’m not sure if I’m up to try another Oreo flavor. I still have 75% of my smores and I’m still finishing up lemon after a month. My kids won’t go near anything other than classic.

We always call them PushPops, i know now that’s the name of another popsicle but in my neighborhood (central PA) we called them that because you had to push them up to eat, obviously. 😉

Ohio gal here, and I have always known them as Freezer Pops, but I would know what people meant when they said Otter Pops
First, I’m a big big devotee of the blog and podcast. That said: Otter Pops. Plain and simply–Otter Pops.
I’m from Tennessee and I always called them Freeze Pops as a kid. Today I have to call them “Freeze Pops–you know, those brightly-colored frozen things in the clear sleeves that you push up” because no one ever remembers what I’m talking about. Then, everyone’s like “Oh yeah! I loved blue!” Haha. I’ve heard of Otter Pops, but I actually thought they were a different kind of ice pop entirely. You’ve enlightened me! 😉
Raised in Florida and we called them flavor ice. But my husband was raised in Colorado and he calls them otter pops.

I need these cookies!! I’ve only seen Cookies n’ Cream recently but wasn’t interested.. My stores suck, either they’ve got 100 packages of regular/golden flavors or birthday cake.
was raised in Indiana for the most part with a transfer to Washington. I knew them as Freeze Pops in Indiana but here they’re only known as Otter Pops.
All these Oreo flavors don’t entice me very much, unfortunately. They were never one of my favorite cookies. I’d take a Pecan Sandy or a Double-Fudge Chips Ahoy or a Keebler elfwich or something any day.
p.s. Those are definitely ‘Otter Pops’ in my world. Why are ‘Otter Pops’ better than just some kind of generic ‘frozen fruit flavored ice treat’? I can tell you.
Because if you have any kind of generic ‘frozen fruit flavored ice treat’ they’re likely to be called something utterly boring and dull like…’frozen fruit-flavored ice treats’ or simply, ‘Ice Treat’ for short. ‘Otter Pops’—what could possibly be more chock-full of pizazz, mirth, and fun than an otter motif? You know they are some of the most playful and mischievous critters on earth, right? They tease their fish before eating them, they play football with the fish in their paws, they eat their fish lying on their back for fun, they even (get this) build huge ‘ice luges’ for themselves on muddy hillsides and slide down them for laughs just like humans at a water-park! Certainly the playful, lovable otter is surely the best mascot for any fruit flavored ice snacks. And the ‘Otter Pops’ packages I’ve seen, reflect this with hilarious otter cartoon faces on each treat! Otters with beards and glasses, hats, etc. Love that.

Flavor Ice or Freezer Pops — maryland and virginia
Flav-R-Ice in Texas, but we had Otter Pops, too. Just different branding for the same thing, and it was probably one vendor that sold them to all the different distributors who named them variously.
They have been sold in Oklahoma under the Fla-Vor-Ice brand as long as I can remember. But even the manufacturer’s website is mixed on what to call them.
I see Freeze Pops, Freezer Pops, and Ice Pops, all on the same page.
