THIRD: What is the HOT TOY this season?

I’m not a parent, but I know there are a lot of you out there buying toys for your kids. So tell me – what is the hot, can’t-find-toy this season?  I have a work colleague who says it’s these Singing Elsa dolls from Frozen:

k2-_581aed52-a824-41b6-a88f-7ee91b0fa2c8.v1

disney-s-frozen-16-singing-elsa-doll-3

Not sure which one is more sought after – the kid Elsa or the adult Elsa. I mean, the kid Elsa comes with an Olaf, which is pretty bad ass? AND they sing Let It Go?  Hmmmm…. I want one.

Anyways, on eBay these are going for about $50, which is sort of nuts.  Still, it’s nothing compared to the HOT TOY when I was a kid, the Tickle Me Elmo dolls, which ended up going for over $1000 at one point. Crazy asses.

So, in the comments below, tell me – what is the HOT TOY for your kdis this season? What have they been pestering you for? Or, even if you’re an adult, what is the hot item YOU WANT this holiday season? Me? I want these. Someone buy all of these for me.

FINALLY: Today’s junk food: Tribe Farmer’s Market Hummus!!

Tribe Farmer's Market Hummus

Tribe Farmer’s Market Hummus: The Money Shots

“But Eric, hummus isn’t junk food!” UM, IT IS when you eat the whole tub with a family size bag of pita chips! Seriously, if you left me unattended, I might keep eating pita chips and hummus, trying to convince myself that its healthy while actually ingesting close to 1500 calories.  CHICKPEAS ARE GOOD FOR ME NOMNOM NOM.

Tribe Farmer’s Market Hummus is a new line for them, meant to blend Tribe’s hummus with super fresh veggies. If you don’t like hummus to begin with, you’re probably not going to enjoy these.  But if so, read on.

Tribe Farmer’s Market Hummus: The Slightly Tilted Money Shots

By the way, for anyone who doesn’t know, hummus is “cooked, mashed chickpeas blended with tahini, olive oil, lemon juice, salt and garlic.” It’s friggin’ delicious. And Tribe Farmer’s Market Hummus comes in three flavors: Cucumber Tzatziki, Vine Ripened Tomato & Basil, and Harvest Carrot & Ginger. The good people at Tribe sent these to me to try and to report to you.

So let’s do it, Rockapella.

FIRST UP: Tribe Farmer’s Market Cucumber Tzatziki Hummus!

Tribe Farmer’s Market Cucumber Tzatziki Hummus: SO MUCH DILL

As a hummus, this Tribe Farmer’s Market Cucumber Tzatziki Hummus is spot on – good smoothness and consistency of the hummus itself with a decent amount of tahini flavor. The cucumber flavor is STRONG – the vegetable-y taste of cucumber came through with the very first bite. Add on top of that a decent dill flavor that never faded, and this is a pretty perfect hummus representation of cucumbers in dill sauce.  Doctor Sis tried it, acknowledged its flavor, and promptly stopped eating it because she doesn’t love dill. I do, and scarfed down the rest. She’s right – while the cucumber flavor was pervasive, its really the dill that is the accent and what you’ll remember.  I enjoyed it.

SECOND UP:Tribe Farmer’s Market Vine Ripened Tomato & Basil Hummus!

Tribe Farmer’s Market Vine Ripened Tomato & Basil Hummus: BASIL BASIL EVERYWHERE

Tribe Farmer’s Market Vine Ripened Tomato & Basil Hummus is REALLY tasty but, quite frankly, is probably the least surprising flavor of the three.  And that’s not a bad thing – tomato basil is just a flavor we’re all so familiar with, it’d be hard to screw up. Tribe’s version is delicious, with every swish of hummus containing nice sharp tomato flavor and a strong backdrop of basil taste. Even the bits of hummus WITHOUT any of the red glob is the center were tasty; this was the first hummus devoured over the Thanksgiving weekend.  A definite re-buy.

AND FINALLY: Tribe Farmer’s Market Harvest Carrot & Ginger Hummus!

Tribe Farmer’s Market Harvest Carrot & Ginger Hummus: Cilantro and ginger clumps

I was most worried about this Tribe Farmer’s Market Harvest Carrot & Ginger Hummus, since I don’t LOVE carrots, but you know what? This was pretty damn tasty too. See, the carrot flavor is a bit more muted when blended with the hummus – it took on a more carrot-soup type flavor, where the sweetness of the carrot came through but the strong bite was left behind.  The bite instead was provided by the ginger, cilantro, parsley mix in the center which provided a perfect accent of spice when I least expected it. More than anything, this hummus tasted FRESH – very bright, very vibrant, and totally consumable.

All in all, these Tribe Farmer’s Market Hummus varieties were pretty awesome, I had to say. They all tasted very very vegetable-y and very fresh, which is all they probably wanted to accomplish. Good combos and good flavors.  Nothing too outside the box, but so what? All that matters is that it tastes good.  I can dig it. Thanks, Tribe!

The cucumber one sounds amazing! I love me some dill! I’ll have to keep an eye out for it at the grocery store

  2. Jeni says:

I love hummus and make it all the time! I use pita crackers or carrots to dip. I’m with Doctor Sis, no love here for dill. The other two sound great, though! Ooh, I wonder how the carrot-ginger favor would translate made into an edamame hummus …

  3. jaime says:

I’m not a hummus fan but like their interesting flavor combos!

  4. Pablo says:

Good review. Will surely try these out.

  5. Anne Sutton says:

I got a baby Elsa doll for my two-year-old at BJ’s. I was in a Toys R Us after Thanksgiving and the frozen stuff was pretty sought after. In my house it seems the wanted gift is Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle shell-raiser toy and my other munchkin wants Paws Patrol vehicles. I work in a school with older kids, and they want Dr. Dre Beats headphones. I’ll have to try the hummus. I just got a Fabulous Food The Costco Way recipe book in the mail. One recipe was a chicken burger slider using hummus.

  6. Jessica says:

My 8 year old niece doesn’t want any Frozen stuff but is BEGGING for a Zoomer. My 4 year old nephew hasn’t said anything in particular.

Also, since I don’t think a day went by when I was a kid I didn’t watch Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego, its HIT IT Rockapella. (OCD coming out there)

Finally, I’m glad to know I’m not the only one who can finish off an entire tub of hummus – although it’s not uncommon for my vessel of choice to be a spoon. I’ve been almost afraid to buy these because of that.

  7. Ryan says:

Was wondering about these. Going to try them all now thanks!

  8. Ultron Jeremy says:

I figured everyone would just want a dancing Groot. I mean, who wouldn’t?

  9. JohnnyP says:

I remember when I was like 6 yrs old Turbo Man was THE TOY to have. Looking on ebay an unopened one is like $300 now.

Anyway the carrot hummus looks good but I usually eat hummus with carrots and that might be overdoing it

  10. Btyson says:

I do not know anything about toys but that hummus looks really good! Especially the tzaziki one, yum!

  11. Indigo says:

I’m a hummus freak. The tomato and basil would be the one I’d go for first. As for what toy I want for Christmas, you can get me diamond stud earrings. Thanks for asking. 😀

  12. Sascha says:

I like those belts, but I tend to find mine for about $5-8 on the clearance rack at Kohl’s.

Hot toys? Well my 7 month old daughter is too young to beg for stuff yet, so I’m ok there.

The 11 year old son is mostly into Minecraft, and wants Smash Brothers for DS.

The 18 year old …. who cares, he’s 18! Here’s some socks and underwear, now get a job and buy your own toys. 🙂

As for me, I’m still saving my pennies for a PS4, but it won’t really be on the front burner until Gran Turismo 7 comes out for it.

I’m still trying to find a hummus flavor I can really get behind, and that Tzatziki one might just do the trick.

  13. Sue says:

My 4 year old wants Dino Meal ( a game), KidiZoom by v-tech (a watch that takes video and photos with games as well) and anything Disney Pixar Cars.
The hummus sounds amazing, i would definitely be buying the tzatziki because i love those flavors. I have a ginger aversion if its not asian and i cant imagine tomato basil hummus.

  14. Brent says:

These sound too healthy. I think I will stick with Sabra roasted pine nut.

  15. Heather says:

I’m not a big fan of plain hummus, but I might like it if it was jazzed up with some of these flavors. As for toys, I’ve been burned too many times when giving gifts to kids. They never seem to like what I pick out so I’ve just started giving a Target or Toys ‘R Us gift card. That might seem lame, but so far it’s been a hit! They actually get pretty excited about getting to choose what they want. Easy for me and awesome for them. It’s a win-win!

  16. Tanya says:

I would so nom the carrot ginger as my first pick! The tomato would be my last choice of the three.

  17. Marc P says:

    Carrot ginger looks tasty.
Good hummus should usually have a small pool of quality olive oil on top. Yum.

With a 1 and 3 year old, picky not to be at point of the hot toy. Maybe if female there would be Frozen.

  18. Brit says:

The 2 mega evolutions of the Pokemon Charizard…at least in my house.

Lego sets are always a top choice too.

  19. CannedWalrus says:

The must-have toy when I was a kid was Beybladez. Dumbest things ever but so much fun.

  20. Cara James says:

    Hummus yum

  21. Alexis says:

I like how hummus always look so, elegant. It’s like hummus is saying to all the other “I’m better than you because I look most estheticly pleasing food.” Also it has a eye glass and has a subscription to Gentleman’s Weekly.

  22. DeannaR says:

The tomato and basil hummus looks like it would go great on a wrap or toasted sandwich of some sort. Whenever I look at hummus, I am struck by how much consideration is put into making it look aesthetically pleasing with colors and swirls–only to be decimated by my dipping item of choice.

  23. Sarah says:

I don’t have kids. The best toy I want this Christmas is a new laptop!

  24. Deb M says:

The niece and nephews just want cash. And chocolate. We’re definitely related. Heh.

  25. Ebonie Holden says:

    try pickled beet hummus!!!love it

  26. alek says:

mmm hummus. Maybe they could do a really interesting attempt; hummus filled pita chips.

  27. Noah says:

That carrot one looks like the perfect dip for some cinnamon pita!

  28. Sophia says:

I make a spicy carrot dip with Harissa, ginger, and cinnamon. Break out some pita bread and baddabing baddabang, pseudo-Moroccan fare.

My Christmas list wish four years in a row was one of those password journals that would only unlock to the sound of your voice. But I also remember spy gear and walking talkies being in high demand.

  29. MP says:

What do I want for this holiday season? All the friends gathered around the aluminum pole, displaying our feats of strength & airing our grievances 😛
I’ve never had a problem getting cash or gift cards. Or cheese! Why make it difficult on the gift giver?

  30. Trainor Lei says:

I didn’t know kids still played with TOYS anymore, least not real ones–all virtual dolls and dress up games are what I see these days. I was in Toys R Us and I heard a 3 year old ask for an IPhone case. WHAT?!

  31. Kn says:

The cucumber one sounds good. I love hummus with everything pretzel crisps! My usual lunch. Today I tried boars head garlic- it was marked down to half price at our local market. It was really tasty! Not bitter at all and really smooth. I also like roasted red pepper.

  32. John R. says:

I’m a Sambra guy, but I’d try these.

  33. Rachel C. says:

I think the Zoomer Dino is pretty hot this year. and Legos…how can you go wrong. I don’t have girls but the Frozen stuff is blowing up.

  34. Kate says:

My greatest hope is that the hummus industry takes a leaf from the chip industry and comes out with an INFINITE number of hummus flavors. Sesame wasabi? Sriracha? Cappucino? Bring. It. On. I’m talking to you, Tribe. Sabra.
