Review: Limited Edition Pumpkin Pie Spice JIF Whips & C’mon…Be Honest…Have You Ever Stolen Something?
Junk Food Nation, a reader shared this story with me about a Georgia man who was caught shoplifting junk food when cops found “13 packs of cashews, 14 packs of peanuts, one pack of heat nuts and four packs of steakhouse Slim Jims” stuffed down his pants. That’s a lot of sodium, people. The best part? The stolen property was returned back to the store. All I can think is “GROSS.”
Anyways, this story got me thinking – have *I* ever stolen something? And then I realized, well YES, I have!
1. Over two decades ago, I walked out of a sporting goods store in Minnesota with a can of tennis balls (by accident I swear!)
2. In high school, it was a big traditional for the Quiz Bowl team (SHUSH) to steal these big magnets that hung on the side of Friendly’s napkin dispensers…so I can chalk that up.
3. And in college, stealing street signs was not only a felony, but a collegiate right of passage! I distinctly remember my friend and I trying to pry a metal sign off a telephone pole with a pitchfork in a random town in Kentucky at 1:00AM. I cannot confirm or deny our success.
Looking back, I’m sure that sporting goods store, that Friendly’s and that town in Kentucky no longer even exist (like Brigadoon!) Anyways, I’m curious just how big of thieves my readers are. Have YOU ever stolen something? Share your story in the comments below. Use false names, fake emails, whatever – I want to know. This isn’t entrapment, I promise (I don’t think). But don’t take my word for it, because I’m no lawyer. (Wait….)
Today’s junk food: Limited Edition Pumpkin Pie Spice JIF Whips!
Limited Edition Pumpkin Pie Spice JIF Whips! I’ve reviewed JIF Whips only a couple of times on my blog, and generally I like it – I’m a fan of whipped cream cheese, whipped peanut butter, whipped whatever. I’m a fan of whatever is easier to spread on my bread. Oh those pesky chemicals though.
Anyways, when I saw these Limited Edition Pumpkin Pie Spice JIF Whips, I thought YES. MORE PUMPKIN SPICE. After trying pumpkin spice in my ice cream, toaster strudels, and Pringles, why NOT peanut butter?
I want my Limited Edition Pumpkin Pie Spice JIF Whips to be as smooth and fluffy as the inside of a pumpkin pie. Heck, maybe someone should make a pie out of this Whips flavor, anyways.
Limited Edition Pumpkin Pie Spice JIF Whips has “natural flavor.” Uh oh.
I opened this tub of Limited Edition Pumpkin Pie Spice JIF Whips up and sniffed – decent pumpkin spice aroma! So that’s a win.
Limited Edition Pumpkin Pie Spice JIF Whips had that same whipped texture that all other JIF Whips had – light like a tub of whipped cream. I tried a spoonful and, to be honest, was disappointed!
The immediate flavor I got had an ok pumpkin pie spice flavor – I could take a little pumpkin and cinnamon, etc. But the peanut butter flavor took over quickly, killing whatever pumpkin flavor I tasted. I mean, I guess I shouldn’t be TOO surprised, since this IS, after all peanut butter at core, but still – I want my pumpkin spice flavor to last longer!
I tried some of this Limited Edition Pumpkin Pie Spice JIF Whips on toast, and found that I could taste even LESS pumpkin spice flavor when spread across bread. Maybe multiple bites of this JIF Whip caused my brain to tune in only to the PB flavor, and not the pumpkin flavor…but still. JIF needed to pump up the pumpkin spice flavor to make this worth it. More cinnamon. More pumpkin. Nutmeg? Sure, do it. MORE MORE MORE. Because after that first initial taste of MMM pumpkin spice, the subsequent bites were just…peanut butter. This definitely fell flat for me. Sorry, JIF.

I’m sorry, I can’t help it but the mental image of a guy with nuts & Slim Jim’s IN HIS PANTS has got me laughing loud enough to disturb my co-workers!!!!! What would Freud say!!!!!
@MKC: LOL, anything I can do to help bring a laugh!
Nope. I could have stolen all kinds of office supplies. But that’s for the whole office & for our jobs. It’s just not right. I have integrity & am one of the most honest people you’ll ever meet. Without trust, you have nothing. I like to think of that line,”In Italy they steal… only once.”
@MP: Office supply theft – I feel like that’s in the employee handbook
I actually have something of a thievery story, the only time I ever stole.
At the age of 5.
See, my grade school was having a Book Fair in our library, which naturally, sold books, but also other random items, such as kites and what not, I don’t remember the exact items it was about 20 years ago. But, I didn’t have any money *which hasn’t changed much* and I saw this Gargoyle’s Coloring book, which looked rad, and I wanted it. So I took it. Hid it under my shirt, I was a pretty skinny kid at the time *which has changed* so it didn’t really show, and I just waltzed right out with it, though I made sure to hide it from my mom. It was also weird because I am pretty sure I knew what I was doing was wrong, but it was more instinctual than actual knowledge. However, the next day, I tried it again, and tried to leave with the aforementioned Kite. I didn’t make it that day, and the experience and scolding I got from that basically ensured I never tried that kind of thing again. Though, in the end I did get away with the coloring book. Which no longer exists, but that is my one and only story of theft.
@EV: I would’ve been PSYCHED for that coloring book, haha
I “stole” 4 chestnuts in my local Asian market. It was those loose nuts that you scoop up in bags. The employee tagged me I showed her and she let me go. I threw on the ground outside after trying it. But never stole anything.
Today I accidently “stole” a shopping cart. When my dad was scouring for fruit outside of the store which has fruit out. I spotted a empty shopping cart and took it. Until I felt it slowed down the lady told me that it was hers. I did not realize it that it was hers because it was nothing in there. I apologized and she was kind about it.
@Alek: LOL – awkward!
@Alek: haha – threw them on the ground. They were THAT BAD?
wow.. i thought the pumpkin one would have been delicious! now i’m not so sad that my target only had the maple brown sugar (which i LOVE, btw). if my target ever gets the pumpkin, i’m sure i’ll still try it, but i won’t be as excited now, lol.
@Kaitlyn: you ended up trying the pumpkin spice whips, right? Which did you like better, the maple or the pumpkin?
JFG, do you make your toast in the oven? That’s how I make mine when I don’t feel like pulling out the toaster in my tiny kitchen-produces toast “grill marks” just like those in your picture.
@Jessica: nope still a regular toaster. I never noticed the lines….maybe I just have a very powerful toaster!
Boy, a bunch of hardened criminals here.
A couple of weeks ago, I as walking through the store drinking a Coke Zero I picked up from the cooler, went through the U-Scan line, paid for everything but forgot the Coke. Didn’t realize it til I got to work 20 minutes later.
On three consecutive Target trips, I’ve been trying to get the Jif Whips Maple and Brown Sugar, and all three times the shelf was full of pumpkin and completely out of the Maple. I think Jif Whips is the greatest thing to happen to peanut butter since peanut butter, but not real interested in the pumpkin, still waiting for the Maple.
@Sascha: Did you end up getting the maple?
Closest I come to stealing something was the time a cashier was ringing my stuff up and scanned a $2 package of napkins twice instead of my $30 french press. I realized what happened and mentioned my total looked wrong, but all she did was count the number of bagged items and lines on the receipt. At that point I didn’t say more and took my $2 coffee pot
@Emily: LOL WIN!
Yes, I have.
@Shorneys: I know. You’re like Danny Ocean
Is it vegan or do the “natural flavors” contain critters?
@Tapgirlsmommy – huh, you know, I’ve never contemplated that question…
Hmmm. I’m still really interested in this, just because peanuts and pumpkins? Yespls. Bummer if it turns out to be muted pumpkin spice, though.
As for thievery, honestly…? Not that I can recall. Unless you count stealing my dad’s sugar cube stash because I wasn’t allowed much sugar as a kid :S
It’s kind of funny considering that I’m always maxing out any theft skills in games like Skyrim, but in the real world? Nah. I think I’ve just always been too aware that there’s really no such thing as a victimless crime, so even if you were stealing from some huge giant like Wal-Mart, it’s the minimum wage employees who actually get in the shit over the theft. Same with dining and dashing – even at a posh restaurant, the server’s gonna be the one paying for your food, not the CEO. Etc.
@mairi – yeah, NEVER dine and dash. That’s not cool
Sort of. The clerk at a local natural food store didn’t scan my detergent and I guess I wasn’t really paying attention to the total or the other stuff was that exorbitantly priced that I didn’t realize anything had happened.. until I was doing my obsessive receipt reviewing.
I’m with Mairi on this one. Still interested. Still going to go try it. I love pumpkin. I love peanut butter. basically the same as any incarnation of the PB+Chocolate combo; I’ll try it at least once..
@Beth: It probably makes up for times when stores have charged us all twice for things.
