Review: Limited Edition Root Beer Float Oreos & Un-Blog-Worthy Foods / What Do YOU Want to See More Of?

Junk Food Nation, after 3+ years of writing this blog, I’m amazed at how much this blog has changed. When I first started, I was blogging about EVERYTHING – regular Doritos, box of crackers that I loved, etc.  My readership was going nowhere. I remember, in the beginning, asking my friend Shelley once if she read my blog. “Nope.” When I asked why not, she replied, “Uh, because I KNOW WHAT DORITOS TASTE LIKE.” Ah, point taken.

Looking back, Shelley’s point made sense – it’s what I SHOULD have been doing all along. After all, new news channels don’t start out by reporting what happened two years ago, and new fashion magazines aren’t there to memorialize last year’s threads. So, from there, I resolved to try as many new things as possible, limited edition items, anything that looked cool, gooey, tasty, unique, etc. Over the years, I feel like I’ve developed a good threshold for what is “blog worthy” and what is not. Yeah, it’s obnoxious to think of things as “blog worthy.” I fully acknowledge this, but whatever, I’m the one eating this crap. Sucks to your assmar.

My friends will often text or tweet me things they saw in the store to see if I’ve reviewed it, and if not, if it’s worth reviewing.  I love getting these texts/tweets because I want to see what they are seeing out there – multiple eyes are better than just my own. But there have been times when friends have asked me to blog about something, and I WON’T, no matter how excited my friends are. Actual examples of suggested blog items:

1) Lunches. I kid you not, I had a friend once send me pictures of the lunch she made four days straight with a caption that read, “YOU SHOULD BLOG ABOUT THIS.” No, I am not going to blog about your turkey and brie sandwich. Yes, I see how you made a smiley face out of the mustard. Yes, I appreciate the addition of spinach. NO I AM NOT GOING TO BLOG ABOUT THIS.  Sorry.

2) Mixed Candy. Always around Halloween time, someone sends me a picture of a giant 7-lb. bag of fun-size candy, asking me to blog about it. Blog about what, Whoppers and Snickers? I think they’ve been covered.

3) Spanakopita, or spinach pie. Seriously. On MORE than five occasions have I been at a party where spanakopita is being served, and people have suggested I review the spanakopita. THE SPANAKOPITA. What?? The explanation is always “Well, it’s sort of fried, so it’s kind of like junk food.”  I mean…I guess.  Sigh. FINE I’LL REVIEW THE SPANAKOPITA *throws keyboard against wall*

4) Jalapeno Poppers. This is mainly directed at one friend who suggests this constantly. GRETCHEN, STOP TRYING TO MAKE JALAPENO POPPERS HAPPEN. IT’S NOT GOING TO HAPPEN.

Anyways, I’m always on the lookout for new items, so I’ll throw this question out to you – what have YOU seen in stores recently that you wish I’d review? Or what items do you wish I would do more of? For example, I rarely review energy bars, drinks, only sometimes ice creams, frozen meals….want to see more of these? What else? Tell me in the comments below!

Today’s junk food: Limited Edition Root Beer Float Oreos!

Limited Edition Root Beer Float Oreos

Limited Edition Root Beer Float Oreos: The Money Shot

Oh yes. OOOOH yes. Limited Edition Root Beer Float Oreos. I didn’t even know these were coming until I saw them on The Impulsive Buy.  Then a short Google search later, they were exploding on the internet! I rushed home after to work to find them, but alas, my local Giant grocery didn’t carry them yet (DAMN YOU, GIANT.)

I was resigned to waiting until the weekend to go looking for these treats, when my Oreo-loving co-worker S. came by my office and held the package out. “Look what *I* found!” HOLY EFF – my jaw dropped!  Best. Colleague. Ever.

Limited Edition Root Beer Float Oreos: Natural Flavors!

Clearly, the root beer flavor in these Limited Edition Root Beer Float Oreos is contained in the “Natural and Artificial Flavor” portion of the ingredients.  That’s a rather convenient label for most companies, isn’t it?  I’ll let you get away with it for now, Mondelez.  I gots my eye on you.

Limited Edition Root Beer Float Oreos: A mix of white and brown

When I opened this package of Limited Edition Root Beer Float Oreos, I didn’t quite get an immediate aroma of root beer…but when I placed one of these Limited Edition Root Beer Float Oreos up to my nose, the aroma was unmistakable – ROOT BEER. Strong, potent. JUST like placing my nose up to a cup of root beer. The smell of root beer is kinda sharp in general, so the way my nostrils felt smelling these cookies resembled very much how my nose feels when I smell actual root beer.

Limited Edition Root Beer Float Oreos: WHITE AND BROWN!

I unscrewed four of these Limited Edition Root Beer Float Oreos, TRYING to get a good shot of the brown creme, but for some reason, each cookie screwed off on the majority-whitish side.  Weird.  Anyways, as you can see, there are two colors of cremes inside – white and light brown.

Limited Edition Root Beer Float Oreos: Golden oreo flakiness

I tasted the white creme first, and it was definitely sweet and creamy with only a hint of root beer flavor. Honestly, it tasted more like birthday cake frosting than anything else, which was a little weird.  But the lighter brown creme – that’s where the root beer flavor came in.  Wasn’t overpowering, but it was creamy and had just the right taste of root beer. Decent sassafras flavor. The cremes together, as they spread across my tongue, had the flavor of a frothy mug of root beer.

Limited Edition Root Beer Float Oreos: Close up on creme

When the vanilla and root beer cremes are eaten with the Golden Oreo, the flavor of the root beer was slightly muted, of course.  But that doesn’t mean that these Limited Edition Root Beer Float Oreos aren’t tasty as hell!

Like the Limeade Oreos, the Golden Oreo served to remind the consumer (me) that this was a cookie meant to remind me of root beer, not to replace root beer. Thus, the muting of the inside flavor wasn’t a bad idea – the resulting flavor of the cookie plus the creme was well balanced; just enough root beer flavor to complement the sweetness of the creme and cookie itself. This is a Golden Oreo with a decent hint of root beer flavor, plain and simple.

I really enjoyed these; I liked them WAY more than the Root Beer Float Chips Ahoy. If you like root beer, you WILL appreciate these.

Ohhh, I love root beer so these are on my list! I have an abnormal addiction to sugary cereals….so do more cereal! Even if I know what boring old Honey Comb tastes like, I would still read about it!

  2. Jessica says:

The thing is I think the lines between “junk food” and not are getting pretty blurry. Sure, candy is always junk food. Turkey sandwich? Depends on what you think of lunch meat and processed cheese. Here as I eat my Apple Jacks and greek yogurt parfait for lunch…

  3. Jason says:

I agree with Sarah… It would be great to see some reviews of new cereals! It is always like Christmas morning to me when I go to the store and spot the new cereals that have just been introduced! In fact, if you ever need a guest blogger for new cereals I would happily volunteer my services 🙂 My favorite new one is Chocolate Toast Crunch. So friggen addicting! PS, great blog!

    • Marc P says:

      I concur on the cereals!!!

You know what sucks about breakfast cereals? Not a damn thing.

    • junkfoodguy says:

@Jason: Thanks for reading man! I appreciate it. You should tweet me @junkfoodguy whenever you’re about to try a new cereal.

  4. Colby says:

I’d love to see more ice creams/gelatos. Particularly super premiuim ones from specialty stores!

  5. To sum up…white AND brown? Anyway, thanks for trying these, I don’t think I can do it, the horror of the Root Beer Float Moose Munch from H&D is still (years later) too fresh.

mmmm…spanakopita…sorry…to your point, I think you’re in a good groove. If you start trying to be everything to everyone you’re going to…you know the rest. Would I like to see more reviews of what fast food restaurants are putting out to know if they’re worth it? Sure. But, well, Ryan’s doing that. More ice cream? Yeah that would appeal to some people. But, well, Dubba and Nick are ice cream devouring machines. Candy? Cybele. Chips? You see where this is going. I like the fact that you dip your toe into a lot of water when there’s something really new or limited, that’s stuff I’m more likely to splurge on and want a heads up on vs. what the entire line of haagaaan daaaaz (is that how you spell it?) tastes like. And if you start reviewing people’s sandwiches in the lunch room, well…it’s been fun 🙂 Say have you tried something called “Saltines”?

    • junkfoodguy says:

@Dana: LOL, moose munch flashbacks, eh?

And I truly appreciate your feedback, man. I agree – there are so many specialty blogs out there, I don’t want to try to compete (couldn’t keep up anyways). I usually try to stick to the Lim Ed stuff and otherwise just stuff I personally like to eat…I was more wondering if people had thought of a food area that was lacking in reviews. People seem to generally want more cereal reviews…maybe I’ll keep my eyes more peeled in that arena.

What about your blog? How do YOU decide what to review?

    • either something I had that was spectacular so I want to hype it (to hope it stays around), or something interesting that doesn’t seem to have already flooded the blogosphere with reviews

  6. Marc P says:

Would love to read cereal reviews. You would have an awesome spin.
Jason’s comment above shows he is a man after my own heart.

As a cyclist that eats a different box each day, love to find new ones to try and if I had the way with nomenclature, writing ability and creativity that you had I would try to do my own review site.

I am sure that Tony Dungy would pass on these – all the colors of these oreos probably cause too much distraction

    • junkfoodguy says:

@Marc P: ANOTHER VOTE FOR CEREAL!

PS: You’re a cyclist? That’s awesome – more trail biking or long distance?

      Re: Dungy comment – LOL

  7. Steve Shrader says:

All Chips Ahoy cookies taste like artificially flavored soft cardboard.

  8. Paul says:

Bro you MUST try/review Terell’s Dinosaur BBQ Chips. It’s usually only sold in Upstate NY however you can buy a bag online. Best chips I’ve ever had.

  9. Shorneys says:

I’d love to see you try some of the newer upscale chocolates that are being produced. Like, things that are still junk food, but maybe not so much edible novelties.

  10. Chester says:

i’d love to see more reviews of Amy’s frozen health food and other frozen health food varieties. the Special K lines of snacks, some Pop Chip stuff, granola bars, and yeah, some gym protein bar fare.

  11. Chester says:

oh, but i haven’t seen many reviews for the Pepperidge Farm strawberry swirl breads or that Willy Wonka candy peel banana ice cream. not even On Second Scoop has covered it yet!

  12. Rocketgirl says:

JFG, I insist you try Little Debbie’s peanut butter cream pie!!! ; )

  13. Kaitlyn says:

i finally bought the root beer float chips ahoy today and i think they’re pretty good. i bet these oreos are better, though! i love root beer, but i rarely drink it. i super love root beer floats but i have those on even rarer occasions.

anyway, i’d like to see maybe some more ice cream and protein bars 🙂

  14. Kelly says:

OMG – Rootbeer float! My co-worker only just found the Limeade Oreos! Onto the massive hunt for the RBF version. Can’t wait to try these!

Honestly, I love this blog for everything that’s already here. Variety of different categories of junk food. And it’s hilarious. Don’t change a thing. BUT (Don’t mind my big BUT), wouldn’t mind seeing more healthy foods posing as junk food because I’m sure your reviews would have me busting a gut laughing. Otherwise, great blog. I love reading your reviews.

    • junkfoodguy says:

@Kelly: Thanks for the feedback, Kelly, and for reading! I’ll be on the lookout for more healthy foods pretending to be junk food 😉

  15. Brit says:

I’d like more products you personally enjoy all the time. Your “go to” snacks, if you will. Even if they are old hat, I enjoy hearing why you are fond of them and the nostalgia you have if applicable.
I was a big fan of your chicken in a biskit post. I think it may have been the first post I read that introduced me to this blog.

I do love me some chicken in a biskit though… :p

  16. JaNet says:

oh noooo! i LOVE the chips ahoy rootbeer float cookies!!!!!! i could eat them alllll day. i hate real rootbeer floats tbh…

  17. Hunter-m3 says:

I have fond memories of eating rootbeer cookies growing up, so I’m glad the mainstream companies are finally joining in on this untapped cookie flavor. Can’t wait to try the oreo take on it.
As for reviewing, I too, like so many commenters before me, am a cereal addict. I eat a lot of cereal. (Actually just finishing up on a bowl of Waffle Crip right now). Thus, although I find I pretty much always try the new cereals before any blogger seems to post a review, I would love to hear your feelings on them.

  18. Sagar says:

    more Combos

  19. Lindemann says:

You should review those delightful Edwards Ice Cream Pies if they get a new flavor. I’ll help.

  20. Christina Gee says:

My boyfriend told me I had problems when I Facebook messaged Oreo this year simply stating, “root beer Oreos.. do it” maybe they were already developing these, but I feel Oreo owes me a free pack lol . Your welcome world. Now, I just need to find these!!!

  21. Ya Buddy says:

You should do wayyyyyyyyyyy more FAST food! Some bloggers do, but they aren’t as funny as you and the don’t take nice/plentiful pictures like you! 😀

  22. Dani says:

I just discovered your blog today and am totally loving it! It’s great that there are other folks such as myself who not only love junk food, but love unique flavored junk food. I’m always on the prowl for quirky edibles like lobster ice cream or 7 Eleven brand steak lovers ridged potato chips. You write and describe things with great humor!! I’ve been cracking up non stop. And I love root beer flavored anything! ‘Didn’t realize there were root flavored Oreos! Now I’m craving root beer and I totally want some root beer barrels! Keep the fun going.

  23. Sparq says:

Every explanation of this product in your review was spot on. The only thing that I have noticed is that the cremes are now in a different pattern. I love the oreo cookie and absolutely love their rootbeer version. I just might buy these again even over the regular double stuff but they are limited right? My favorite highly distributed brand of rootbeer is IBC and next would be the drive up A&W on tap. People have their favorites but the real answer to the root beer cookie lies with this very flavorful masterpiece of a cookie. They figured out how to get the aroma just right. Great review and hope to see more soon. Love, Peace and Happiness.
