Review: MUNCHPAK (IT’S CONTEST TIME!) & Burrito Vending Machine? Well done *slow clap*
OH SNAP, Junk Food Nation. It’s CONTEST TIME up in here, thanks to my good friends at MUNCHPAK, a brand new monthly junk food mail-subscription service! But we’ll get to that in a minute.
First, I just wanted to give a QUICK shout-out to best best new invention of 2014 so far: THE BURRITO BOX, or the world’s first burrito vending machine. SAY WHAAA. Oh, that’s right. The Burrito Box (like Red Box) is so far only available in two locations in LA, but it’s safe to say we need these EVERYWHERE.
You put in money. Select your breakfast/lunch burrito. And the machine gives you a hot, hormone- and antibiotic-free burritos for $3. THREE DOLLARS, PEOPLE! Apparently, flavors include: roasted potato with cage-free egg and cheese; uncured bacon with cage-free egg; chorizo sausage with cage-free egg and cheese; shredded beef and cheese, and free-range chicken with beans and rice.
Dude. Someone get this in my office building, stat.
OK, BACK TO TODAY’S JUNK FOOD: MUNCHPAK!
The good people at MunchPak contacted me to ask if I’d like to try one of their MunchPaks, and I said yes. But let’s begin with what MunchPak is. According to their website:
“MunchPak was created to allow people to try snacks from all over the US and the rest of the world. No matter if you are really busy or just plain lazy… MunchPak makes snacking convenient by offering free shipping to it’s subscribers.”
Got that? Subscription-based mail-order US/international snack boxes.
My MunchPak arrived in a good size cardboard box adorned with MunchPak tape. When I sliced it open, inside I found confetti! Like a party just got started.
Here’s how MunchPak works: You pay money. You sign up for a plan: one month, 3 month, 6 month, etc. You sign up for frequency: weekly, bi-weekly, monthly. And then they send you snack boxes full of snacks from all over the US and all over the world.
The range of MunchPak snack variety was seem in MY personal MunchPak – I saw snacks above from Asia, the US, Mexico, the UK… their website states:
“MunchPak was built and designed with the intention of letting people try the most popular snacks, and of course, local favorites from all over the world. There are tons of great tasting snacks from quality companies all over the US that aren’t offered in every state. There are also thousands of other delicious snacks made by various companies all over the world.”
So, they’re trying to bring the variety to YOU. Let’s take a look at what I received…
My MunchPak had a number of Latin snacks: Barritas Frescas, which looked like a Strawberry Newton with the innards exposed, De La Rosa Peanut Confection, my FAVORITE marzipan peanut candy, Sabritones, a chile/lime fake-pork-rind snack, Japanese Nuts, I saw these a lot when I was in Mexico, slightly offensive but TASTY, Gansito, a chocolate covered Twinkie that also has jelly inside, and Pulparindo, an “extra hot and salted tamarind pulp candy.” Strangely enticing.
My MunchPak had a bunch of US goods: Famous Amos Cookies, not to be confused with Famous Jameis, Snyder’s PB Pretzel Sandwiches, yummy, and Herr’s Ketchup Potato Chips, to which the Junk Food Gal definitely said EWWWW.
US Snacks, continued: Gardettos, the better-than-Chex-Mix snack mix, Sweet and Salty Nuts, *cue immature laugh*, Original Penguin, uh…it says milk chocolate covered biscuit filled with chocolate cream…oooook……
…Sour Smog Balls, crunchy candy w/ sour chewy center, Pop-Tarts, Munch Peanut Bar, Rice Krispies Treat, and something called Chick O Stick, which the Junk Food Gal thought was orange gum, but Google reveals is a peanut butter confection.
My MunchPak had Asian snacks too! Hello Panda, cookies with chocolate cream inside, cellophane wrapper rice crackers (love these), Pocky, a popular stick cookie, Grape Bubble gum, and Hi-Chews, the best damn Asian Starburst I’ve ever had.
My MunchPak ended with two offerings from Europe – Nutella, which I will eat on anything, including my fingernails, and Cadbury Dairy Milk Buttons, which I’m pretty sure are just chocolate chips, but what do I know?
So that was my MunchPak! For $20 a month, it’s a good deal – there’s definitely more than $20 worth of snacks in this box, and if you’re someone who just goes through life jones-ing for crazy ass snacks to supplement your already energetic US junk food habit (like me), then MunchPak is DEFINITELY for you. AND GUESS WHAT? I’m gonna give two of you out there a chance to try a MunchPak snack box for YOURSELF. READ ON, NATION!

My favs would have to be Nutella & Ketchup Potato Chips
Those rice crackers that are full of MSG…with the little snow children on the packaging. SO DELICIOUS
I happen to really like this Israeli peanut snack, I believe its called Bamba. Its puffed corn covered in peanut butter. Savory and delicious! Can’t eat just a few. Usually finish the whole bag. They have a filled version as well, filled with nougat or halva flavors. The nougat is pretty good.
AHHH HI CHEW HI CHEW HI CHEW. Hi Chew is my favorite non-US snack. GOD that stuff is good – GRAPE ALL THE WAY.
My favorite isn’t in this box. It is from my native country Venezuela and its called a toronto. Its a hazelnut in a chocolate ball and I could pop them in my mouth all day long.
Went to pick up some snacks for the Golden Globes at Walmart. I meant to get some chocolate but totally forgot. I love Cadbury’s caramel bar. I’ve avoided eating Milka bars, because the first ingredient isn’t chocolate, but the next time I run to the store I might pick one up and try it again.
When I was in Japan, I picked up these grape soda candies that are hard and fizzy but have a soft gummy center!
Cipsters when I was in Italy. So very good and addictive!
I always got the best chips from my uncle who lived in England when I was a kid. There was a shrimp and cocktail flavor that I used to beg for!
They aren’t in your box, but these little japanese cookies shaped like panda heads with filling on them. They’re SO GOOD and so chocolately!
It is a toss-up between green tea Pocky and Fries ’n Gravy Lays.
Because GRAVY OM NOM NOM NOM.
Yes, I did just say this out loud in my cubicle.
Nutella is a fave, but if I buy a jar it’s me and a spoon and then self-loathing. Thankfully they have the little snack ones with the little breadsticks now. Also love the Hapi Sriracha Peas in the canister, cubicle staple for me.
The ketchup chips! (I think they’re international, I can never find them in the states)
I love Hello Panda and Pocky
Green tea kit kats!
Thin sesame and honey candy or Botan Rice Candy.
I love pokeys they are like my go to snack :D!! and the kit kat seasonal bars
My favorite junk food from over the sea is Crunchie’s Cookies. Only 8 in a pack but they’re amazing.
I have longed to try British potato crisps ever since I read Augusten Burroughs Possible Side Effects. He mentioned I think lamp and mint crisp as well as roast chicken and I’ve also read about Red Leicester & Carmelised Onions which sounds swell.
I’m in the UK – Lamb and Mint ones may be a special edition as they’re not a standard flavour over here. Roast Chicken is one of the most popular, and Cheese & Onion are as well. They’re made by Walkers (Which I think is branded Lay’s elsewhere) as well as other brands 🙂
Oooh lala, favorite foreign treat? mmm mine would have to be sugus. Which I believe is from Thailand, but I would NOM on them all the time when my family lived over seas in Indonesia. So good. I definitely want to try British treats more though! xo Thanks for the contest!
Nutella. I made a Nutella pudding this weekend, delicious!
I also had “Oreos” in London with half a chocolate wafer, other half vanilla, loved them.
I can’t buy Nutella anymore, I look at the whole jar as a serving!
Fox’s Butter Crinkles! Sadly, so rarely imported…
Omg Funyuns ….. Oh and biscoff cookie spread!
Being from a rural area, I havent had much a chance to try import snacks. The only thing I’ve really tried is Nutella and that’s awesome.
Ka-Me Wasabi Peas Snack Mix, a Japanese snack that is Awesome!
I really love Nutella, probably one of my favorites.
I also love the Hello Panda cookies. They use to sell them at my store but I haven’t been able to find them lately.
Kindereggs are so so wonderful!!
I am partial to zero bars and (not sure of name) soybean coated peanuts (found in Mexico).
Chick-o-Sticks are my FAVORITE GHETTO SNACK! (Definition of a ghetto snack: something you buy in a bodega with the spare change at the bottom of your bag; other examples: individually wrapped sour patch kid, no name mint balls that are too big to suck on without looking like a chipmunk, and loosies {lol})
@Christie: You had me cracking up at individually wrapped sour patch kids
I would love any junk food you would like to send me i really just like any junk food. I also like to try new things from different places soo any snack that are not in the us would be nice too. I love mexican snacks and chinese candy..but any would be good
I love senbeis from japan. They’re so delicious.
I Signed up for a month of MunchPak after reading this review.
I got HALF the amount of products you got.
Either they sent you the “family size box” or just really packed them in so you’d give a good review….
I’m unhappy.
@Izzy – 🙁 I’m sorry you didn’t have a great experience!
