Review: Barcel Spirrones & Invest in “Early Retirement” i.e. Help My Sister’s Kickstarter Movie!
Junk Food Nation, there’s so much going on in the world today: the aftermath of those three girls rescued in Cleveland. The Grizzlies beating OKC last night. And this crazy limo fire story! Whoa.
But today I just want to talk about my Actor Sis’ Kickstarter Film, “Early Retirement.” Actor Sis has been hustling the LA dream for a while, and this is her first short film project! See the video about the project below:
Now, as you know, Kickstarter is a crowdfunding platform, and this film needs some cash. They are $2100 away from their $15,000 mark, so they are already about 88% there. If you want to learn more and maybe contribute (NO AMOUNT IS TOO LITTLE), please visit this link:

Read about the project, and help out 🙂 I normally don’t ask anything of my readers (except to RT me 😛 ), but I’d love to help make this happen for Actor Sis. If everyone I know who reads this blog gave even $1 – they’d make their goal in no time! And thanks, from one Junk Food fan to another.
Ok, enough soap boxing. Today’s junk food: Barcel Spirrones!
Barcel Spirrones! The official pork rind of Mexico? I must have Cinco De Mayo still on the mind, because REALLY feeling like some fried pork fat last night. So I pulled out a snack from Mexico (it’s still good, right?) and dug in.
Hmmmm. Man, Wilbur…your skin is so crispy and salty. That’s soooome pig.
Unless I’m translating this wrong, this means the Flavor of Jokes. Barcel, you make no sense. Pigs on trampolines though? Always funny.
Cuero de Cerdo is pigskin. Delicious delicious pig skin.
Barcel Spirrones were your standard pork rind. These were smaller pieces, which I liked – I’ve eaten big honkin’ chicharrones before that were as big as my head, so I liked the bite size.
The flavor of these Barcel Spirrones were standard, but definitely of a certain quality. Each puffy piece was easy to chew, had a nice big pork-y taste, and was not too salty. Additionally, amongst the puffy pieces were some smaller pure pork rind pieces that were a little curled up and HARD AND CRUNCHY. I liked the variety. Soft and crunchy together.
These Barcel Spirrones also came with a flavor packet! Excellent. I ripped it open, drizzled it into the bag, and shook it up.
After adding the salsa packet, these Barcel Spirrones were even better! The “salsa” was more like Valentina – a salsa like hot sauce from western Mexico. Has a good tang, and a nice tomato-ey taste. After mixing these up, the chicharrones were cracklin’ like Rice Krispies. They were wet but still had a great crunch. The salsa made the pork rinds even more salty (which wasn’t a bad thing), and really brought out more smoky flavor. Slightly spicy, crunchy, tomatoey, tangy, and of course, full of pork flavor.
All in all, just a normal, solid bag of pork rinds. The addition of the flavor packet made it even better. They really need to start doing that in the US.
PURCHASED AT: OXXO store in Mexico
COST: about $1.50
