Review (x2): New Savory Red Bean, New Tomato & Sweet Basil Brown Rice Triscuit & New Red Bull? Do We Need This?

Junk Food Nation, a rare Tuesday post!  Well, semi-rare.  Just trying to take my mind off of yesterday’s Boston tragedy. My heart goes out to all those present, involved, and affected.

Over the weekend, I noticed that there are three new versions of Red Bull out: Red Bull Editions!

new red bull?

Well hellooooooo

Apparently, Red Bull started to realize they tasted disgusting, and wanted to flavor it up a bit.  Now there is Red Bull: Red Edition (Cranberry flavor), Red Bull Silver Edition (Lime flavor), and Red Bull Blue Edition (Blueberry flavor).  I haven’t tried any of them, and won’t since there are plenty of good reviews out there (Gizmodo, HuffPo, The Impulsive Buy, Foodette).  But my main thought is: are these really necessary?  I’m pretty sure Red Bull is doing damn well, as energy drinks aren’t going anywhere, and Jagerbombs I think are still very popular.  Plus, Red Bull owns sports teams and sh*t.

I guess Red Bull is trying to compete with soda companies like Mountain Dew, etc., that are releasing their own versions of energy drinks, and don’t want to be held back by their medicinal flavor.  All I know is that this will make Red Bull and Vodkas even THAT MORE DANGEROUS.  The last time I went out, I had four gigantic Red Bull Vodkas, because apparently I like to pretend I’m still in college, and later found out that was enough caffeine to kill a horse.  Nice.

Today’s junk food: New Savory Red Bean & New Tomato & Sweet Basil Brown Rice Triscuits!

New Savory Red Bean & New Tomato & Sweet Basil Brown Rice Triscuit: The Money Shots

Hey remember when I already reviewed two of these flavors (here and here) and then said I wouldn’t review anymore? Yep, I lied.  Well, sort of – I bought these New Savory Red Bean & New Tomato & Sweet Basil Brown Rice Triscuits back when I bought the other two flavors, and after tasting both of them, I figured, ah what the hell.  But since it’s a rare Tuesday review, I’ll just condense my comments on both of them.  Let’s do this:

New Savory Red Bean Brown Rice Triscuit: Red Bell Pepper Powder, huh? That’s odd.

New Savory Red Bean Brown Rice Triscuit: MMMM BEAN-Y

These New Savory Red Bean Brown Rice Triscuits were tasty, but probably the most mild mannered in terms of flavors I’ve tried so far.  Like the others, this was a nice crispy crunchy cracker, due in part to the red beans baked into the cracker.  The flavor was tangy right off the bat, which was surprising, since this flavor was “Savory Red Bean.”  That was definitely the red bell pepper powder talking.

Overall, the cracker did have a slight bean-y flavor, and the aftertaste smacked out a slight beaniness.  It was a good savory flavor, and I liked it.  Was it what I expected? Not really…but it was a good flavor.

And now, a quick snapshot of the caloric intake for both the above and below crackers:

New Tomato & Sweet Basil Brown Rice Triscuit: Spices INCLUDE basil?? Well, I should hope so!

New Tomato & Sweet Basil Brown Rice Triscuit: Speckled with green

These New Tomato & Sweet Basil Brown Rice Triscuits were loaded with flavor.  Immediately upon biting into one, I was met with a very tangy heavy tomato powder flavor and a SUPER strong taste of basil.  The crunch here was even more crispy than the Savory Red Bean variety, simply because this didn’t have any sweet potato or red bean baked into the rice/wheat mixture.  These were tangy, had a good flavor of basil, but if I had one complaint: these were rather salty.  While the previous flavor was more Ho-Hum, Triscuit was really aggressive here with the taste.  Might be a tad too strong for my taste.  But still, solid cracker all around.

I really, really, really like the new Cranberry Red Bull… I just wish it wasn’t so expensive…

    • junkfoodguy says:

      @JR: Is it expensive?

    • Jolly Rodger says:

I guess not any more than regular Red Bull, but at $2+ for an 8 ounce can it always seemed expensive, especially compared to Rockstar and other energy drink that often have twice the caffiene and ounces for the same price.

    • junkfoodguy says:

@J. Rodger: Yeah, true – that IS expensive. Still, I never liked Monster either, and felt like maybe Red Bull tasted a LITTLE better…that’s what you pay for, I guess.

I was in traffic a block away when the bombs went off. I was leaving after the Red Sox game. I actually heard the explosion, but didn’t think much of it. Just thought it was fire works. Until a thousand cops started flying in the same direction. It turned a great day into the total dumps. I just can’t understand these people 🙁

@Will: WHOA! Glad you’re ok, man. Yeah, what an awful way to mar the day. Thankfully, it’s all over. Next year Patriots Day will mean even that much more. Again, glad you were safe!
