Review: New Snyder’s of Hanover Flavor Doubles Hot Buffalo Wing & Buttermilk Ranch Pretzels & WHAT ARE YOU DOING, TSA??

Junk Food Nation, as you’ve heard a snowstorm is hitting DC.  My Facebook feed is littered with people lamenting how little snow there actually is outside, versus some friends who are living in surrounding areas who are getting pummeled.  All I can say is ZIP IT.  Gov’t was cancelled today.  DEAL WITH IT.

However, that doesn’t end my own personal beef with government.  I found out yesterday that the TSA is allowing small knives back on planes now????  Um….what!?  In all seriousness, did I miss something?  Was there some huge movement amongst fliers to “GIVE US BACK OUR KNIVES”??  Why the hell would TSA make this ok.  I remember that the 9/11 hijackers used boxcutters and razorblades, which are apparently still not allowed… but “knives with retractable blades shorter than 6 centimeters (2.36 inches) and narrower than 1/2 inch” are now ALLOWED?  Like, a Swiss Army knife blade.  WTF.

The Bloomberg article I’ve linked to says the rule was changed to meet international guidelines.  Ok…so because they allow knives to be carried on a plane originating from Peru, we have to allow them here?  I really don’t understand.  If you’re packing a knife, or something, that for some reason you REALLY NEED in your landing location, just check the bag…right?   “Oh, but that’s a pain.”  I’m sorry, I’m not a real fearmonger, but I prefer my planes knife-less.

Seriously, Nation – someone explain to me what possible purpose we need to carry knives on planes?  And trust me, I AM ALL ABOUT INDIVIDUAL RIGHTS – free speech, balanced and checked government, etc. etc.  But knives on planes????  WHY.  Someone tell me why.

Look, my cable is coming in an out, so let’s just make this a quick review.  I love Snyder’s of Hanover Pretzels.  My favorite is the Hot Buffalo Wing flavor Pretzel Pieces, straight up. So when I saw these New Snyder’s of Hanover Flavor Doubles Hot Buffalo Wing & Buttermilk Ranch Pretzels, I was definitely intrigued.  Buffalo Wing pretzel pieces AND ranch pieces?  Would these mesh?

I ate some of these New Snyder’s of Hanover Flavor Doubles Hot Buffalo Wing & Buttermilk Ranch Pretzels, and long story short: not worth the trouble.

Did it taste bad? No.  In fact, the Hot Buffalo Pieces here are the exact same as those that come in a bag of Hot Buffalo Wing pretzel pieces.  They were full of crunch, tang, and great Buffalo flavor.

How about the ranch pieces? While they weren’t my favorite, they tasted good too – herbacious, tangy, creamy, these tasted like really good ranch flavored croutons you might put on a salad.  There was definitely a hint of sweetness that took the flavor almost into blue cheese territory as well.  Very good.

So what’s the problem?  Eating them together was the problem.  The flavors separately worked so well, they didn’t (to me) work together.  The creamy ranch balanced out the hot wing, but so what?  I don’t want my buffalo flavor muted.  I don’t want my ranch to be just a creamy afterthought to the buffalo sauce.

I dunno – this mix was fine, and tasted FINE, but that’s about it. Not a bad idea, but not my favorite. Next time I’ll stick with eating these wonderful delicious flavors on their own.

So basically you’re saying you’ve had it with these monkey flying knives and this Monday through Friday plane?

  2. Jolly Rodger says:

I’ve had friends fly to go hiking other places and arrive at their destination with their luggage lost; the only reason they checked their bag was because they needed a knife. I don’t see the big deal in allowing small knives, I used to carry one before the ban and use a knife nearly everyday for various things. Can’t recall ever hearing any issues involving knives on planes before it.

You can probably do just as much damage bringing the sharp pair of scissors you can already bring on board.

@JRodger: I understand, just a difference of opinion – I *do* see the big deal in allowing knives.

    • Jolly Rodger says:

What’s the big deal then? I’m failing to see the big deal in small knives.

    • junkfoodguy says:

@J Rodger: I dunno, getting stabbed I guess. Look, you’re right – it’s not a huge deal, and I’m not trying to be a fearmonger. Though, I will say that most hiker friends I have usually have huge packs that needed to checked anyways. And that’s how they carry their big ass knives. So, in your situation, carrying a carry on and wishing to bring your pocketknife for everyday use – yes I get that situation. I guess I’m saying I don’t think checking a bag is the worst thing in the world, either.

Nice assessment. Wow, we weren’t even aware that these existed. The buttermilk ranch flavored pieces are our favorites among the pieces line, and the buffalo wing ones aren’t too shabby either, but we’re betting that we wouldn’t like mixing them together as well.

  4. I had the opposite problem; I could barely detect the Ranch pieces in the mix.

  5. Kahnfucius says:

Sorry for the confusion, that was the “as edited for tv” version of the classic Samuel L. Jackson quote from “Knives on a Plane”

  6. Wait, so I still can’t bring a frickin’ tube of toothpaste on a plane, but they’re allowing knives?!?! How is that fair? Give us back our toothpaste, TSA!!!

@Teresapalooza: Toothpaste – never even thought of that. That means I have disgusting teeth, BECAUSE I never thought of that, lol
